I found an old marine vhf Uniden I had for the boat.
It is an Atlantis 250. Will it serve?
What are you using?

Baefong handheld ham radio. No idea on model #. Cheap one..

I have the Yaesu VX8DR and FT2DR. Enjoy them both equally, though the FT2DR does APRS and GPS built-in.

I think the big thing with using marine radios is they may be too powerful and mess up other Communications - from what I’ve read it’s illegal to use unless you’re on a boat. Take this with a grain of salt as I’m no expert but if you have a radio that’s equivalent in wattage to regular handheld radios (5-8w) - I’d assume you’d be fine. marine radios easily get to 25 Watt. there is a great appeal to using a marine radio though and that’s the weather alerts and possibility of being waterproof / resistant

Short answer, no. Legally, marine radios can't be used on land. If you can transmit on a frequency that another user in the group can receive, which isn't going to be on one of the marine channels, there is still a license requirement.

This is a great option to get started. FCC license still applies but no problem talking to all the others running this or similar. Slap a magnet mount roof antenna to get the transmission outside of the cab and you can reach pretty far. Transmit power shouldn't be an issue. A 50w in the group doesnt cause any problem with the little HTs
