The shims sit inside the center recess of the front clutch plate/hub. My shims were stuck in the hub, and I dug them out with a pick. If you get a kit, then you'll have plenty of options, but sometimes it's nice to measure what was there before and, as a first try, put enough in there to match or barely exceed the previous threshold.

Simplified steps should be something like:
  1. Stator/coil
  2. Belt pulley/rotor
  3. Shims in the back/center pocket of the front clutch plate
  4. Front plate onto the shaft then install and tighten the center bolt
They should be hanging out inside this guy

Ope that would explain where it went. Just went out to the garage, slammed the old one on the floor and the shim manifested.
