What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Drove from NH to just west of St Louis 21 hours. Then on to Westcliff Co the next day. Medano Pass to Great Sand Dunes. Then up to Creede for ice cream. Lake City to Engineer Pass down to Silverton for the night. Up for breakfast in Silverton then on the Ophir Pass. Telluride for pizza, followed by Last Dollar Rd to our cabin for the next 3 nights. Hopefully Imogene and Black bear pass tomorrow or Tuesday

Hammered out some miles all while sucking down some fuel.

NH is New Hampshire, right? (is that even still a state 😁). You are a mad lad! haha..Those memories will last forever. 👍

While replacing the spark wires I broke the distributed cap. Better now than on a trail I suppose. Waiting for parts…

Replaced the starter. Realized I needed a larger jack for the future so went and picked up a badlands 3 ton. Comically large compared to the hand me down floor jack I had. View attachment 4196814View attachment 4196813View attachment 4196815View attachment 4196816
Love my Badlands...just heavy as f*#k. I have 3 floor jacks, 1 trans jack, and 1 motorcycle jack, I use them all the time!

My 80 is still out in CO chilling...had a small club event at Good Evening Ranch in WVA this past weekend...small motley crew of rigs....1 200, 2 80's, 1 FJ Cruiser, 1 Ford Explorer on 35's (my son, he has a 4Runner too), 1 Ford Ranger (owner has a BJ70 too). It was rainy overnight, but fine during the day, but very slick!

And my signature Crab Cakes for dinner... ;) 🦀

Anxiously waiting to hear what you think with the transmission swap and no turbo!

How hard was to drill and tap with the engine in place?

Looking good!
Physically not hard, mentally tough haha. I bought a little Milwaukee right angle drill adapter so it made the actually drilling pretty easy. Used a step bit for the big center hole. I ran out of brake clean and daylight so I still haven’t finished cleaned up the inside and resealing it. I used grease on every drill bit and when tapping and it helped hold back some of the shavings.

Very nice!
Are you going stage 1 or 2?

I am in Africa for the next couple of weeks, so ordered some Escape Gear front seat covers, and was able to pick them up today at their headquarters in Cape Town. Will shove them in my rifle case to bring home and saved over half of retail by not shipping and importing. Picked up a nice dry bag while there for 50% off ($37) as well. The first hour here saw 70-80-100-200-300 series LC’s. Off to Mozambique tomorrow, and I imagine I’ll be hunting out of a 70 for the rest of the trip.

Me too! I'm coordinating shipping now to get my trans out to them...

Mangled up the front R&P so it needed some love. Thankfully the ARB survived a decent hit to it but still operated just fine. Installed Revolution Gears 4.56 R&P along with a 29 spline pinion flange and a solid spacer from Cruiser Outfitters. Zuk from Gearinstalls.com blessed my pattern via emails, then I proceeded to abuse her in the San Juans with my daughter that same weekend.

One of the picture is from the top of the Wall on Poughipsie after she conquered it using her 4runner on 32s and open diffs w/o sliders. We celebrated by eating lunch and reveling in her accomplishment. Her 4runner is on the other side of Beastie so it's not easy to make it out.

It was an awesome daddy and daughter + BF + friends weekend, and one that we'll both remember for a long time. We just keep making our annual memories in the San Juan more and more special.

That is quite the accomplishment. I never even tried the wall in my GX and it's on 33s and has sliders and full skids. She must be quite the driver! These trips with the kids are pretty special. I took my daughter and BF to the San Juans last year and they got to ride along for all the trails and really liked it. Especially Black Bear. I'll be passing my GX along to her when she graduates in a few months so I'll have to meet her in Colorado and see if she can get up the wall. :)

I'm really proud of her. This trip was all about what she wanted to do and I was merely an advisor, spotter and a recovery rig. She picked the trails that she wanted me to lead and she followed. The folks from SAS filled her head with the Wall and 37s and all that so she really wanted to overcome her own fears, and to puff out her chest! Truthfully, we thought the gatekeeper to the Wall was way more challenging than the actual Wall itself. That's where she needed a tug from here and there.

I'm proud to say that she's been going down the steps on Black Bear on her own since she started driving her 4runner. I always give her the option to wait for me to walk back up to the steps after I go down it first, but she ends up being right behind me! She doesn't see what the big deal is with BB steps. Wait till you have a taller rig with more crap up top - is my usual response.

I do sleep with one eye open due to the fact she's been jonesing to get a hold of the 80 keys for years now :hmm:

Please share some pictures of your African trip. Specially the wildlife.

Picked this up today and had the tow truck drop it off. 97 collectors edition 310k couple bumps on the body but overall in ok shape. California/Oregon truck so no rust, paint is pretty smoked but that’s fixable or just roll with it. Interior is 7/10.
The owner ran it low on oil and it has a rod knock so will get it in the shop and see what we can do. Might do rebuilt engine, might do a donor engine or might just roll some new bearings in it and see how that goes.

Would love to but not sure where they will be appropriate to post here. I assume we will hunt out of a 70 series the whole time. We charter into camp later today and start the hunt on Friday. Here are a few from a day near Cape Town.
