I did a full trans service today on my HDJ81. All four new solenoids from Cobra automatics, new filter and kickdown cable that was rusty. Cleaned everything up, put a new FIP gasket on and topped off the fluids. Followed the recommended guides and manuals and overall wasn't too bad just time consuming. The ball thing is actually a hand operated vacuum pump that holds 6 liters which was almost perfect.

The kickdown cable didn't need the valve body dropped so I considered that a huge win. Transmission shifts waaay better, feels more responsive and crusie control is working as it should. Next I need to install my wholesale automatics trans cooler but I'll do that in 2000km when I drain and refill the fluid.

Still need to find the silver bead and crimp it on. Otherwise I'll need to get another

I should get some pics. But finally welded up my leaking muffler. and wired up my aux a/c fan. Now to do some sound deadening before this months Cali trip.

Got 35's finally! Going to yank off my wheels today and have the 31's taken off Monday to install my Apex RPV's and then get the new tires fitted back on

Also picked up a Bulldog 48" high lift jack, just need to finish up my DIY tire carrier and I'm ready for fun in 2026

Welds? A set was for sale out here. And figured they look good on a 80. Old school cool

A question I was wondering. From the factory, is the Fuel Door Release on the left or right of the Hood Release.

I have pictures of my truck, before mechanically refreshing it, with the Fuel Door Release on the left. But, I have seen others that it is on the right of the Hood Release.

The FSM wasn't clear but I think there is a figure where the fuel release is on the right, and another figure where it is on the left.
The can be interchanged.

Fuel release is on the right from the factory. I always switch mine Cause i'm opening the gas cap more than the hood

Thanks.

After rebuilding, I also kept the Fuel Release on the Left, which seemed more natural and agreed with my photos before interior gutting.... but I then switched it back after I saw many 80/lx450 had it on the right...

I assume someone switched them before my ownership or maybe I did it many years ago and forgot! Owned it for 26 years now.

Depends on the year. Early 80s were on the left; 3rd generation is on the right.

I’ve started a rear sub replacement. I had a tote full of different sound deadeners waiting for the right time to be used. The tote contained: second skin butyl mat, some Hushmat silver butyl mat, some leftover roll of closed cell foam from the “sound deadener showdown” days, some noico closed cell foam, and some vevor 2-in-1 butyl/Mlv sheets. I decided to apply to the rear quarter panels and rear floor for the sub project. The carpet went back in but it was a tighter fit.

Next phase will be to work on the wiring, sub, and amp.

I had a little time to work on the wiring project in the rear. Made a little QPM with some 8” x24” sheet and some cutting board I had. I ran a 6 AWG wire back there with a 60 amp fuse. Grounded to one of the seat belt mounts. Then ran an 8 awg to the amp. I’ll add a deck hatch to access the QPM wiring.

The original plan was to mount a sub there but I decided i like the QPM there and I’m building a small sub box which will go behind the seats.

There is a clear plastic hose loomed in with some wiring n that area. It’s open on one end. Anyone know what that should attach to or is it for another market accessory?

After allot of rain in the recent days I went and hastily repaired and raised my breathers (breather pipe from center locker to the transfer-case T had perished) and went off having a good ol wheeling session with a lot of deep water crossings. (Deep by my measure without a snorkel fitted anyway)

(The car below the overtopping dam isn't me, but I wanted to share the beauty of this spot)

Plenty of brief water up over the bonnet moments, but a brief plunge is no problem.

Behold, the majesty of my very affordable breather extension work.
