What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Let my 10 y/o daughter romp around the property. I’m in NE TN, we got over 11”.

Side note, she drives better than most on the road today. Half-joking. Her only instruction was not to hit anything. I let her park it inside the garage - no fear; just action.

She can basically see over the dash. 🤣

Window Rocket install. Works great. Couldn’t fit behind kick panel because prior owner had rats nest of extra wiring for alarm, kills switch, cell phone, who knows what else and I didn’t want to try to move around the factory wiring harness too mush. And I’m not good enough with wiring to try to untangle and get rid of all the add ons. The unit fit perfectly up above the dead pedal.

Hands down one of the 10 best mods I’ve done to my 80.

Got ARB drawers and floor kit installed.

Got the new ham radio almost installed, but I completely botched the soldering on the PL259 coax terminal. Need to order a new one and prob use a torch to get the solder to flow correctly. So I’ll have to wait to seal that all up.

Also my turbo kit shipment came from C&C. So I’ve been watching the installation video and planning the install. Gotta find some garage space to borrow somewhere! My rig can not enter my garage. Too tall.

Actually, as a result of installing these drawers, I had to remove a couple of cool items which I’ll post for sale.

I have a 4x4 Labs 3rd row storage basket that I no longer need. It mounts to the left side wheel well hump. I’ll post in classifieds. Also another flat steel platform that mounts to the passenger side wheel hump. I had my subwoofer secured to it. It’s just a flat steel platform. Very sturdy. Will post in classifieds also.

I’m rethinking the overhead storage shelf/attic. I want to sleep in there and I can’t quite sit up with that shelf in there. It’s secured to Delta VS brackets over each window.

I think I want to build or buy vertical storage instead that covers each window.

Record snow here in Wilmington. Approximately 7-9" so I had no choice but to wake up early and drive around. She handled it gracefully while others were slipping and sliding. Also got to see a cousin at the park for a photo op, also a RHD.

Cheers!

Had a good ol two part garage session.
One part preventative maintenance/repair, and one part upgrade!
Followed by a good ol fashioned wheelin' session to ensure the work was comprehensive.

1. We fitted new (2 part) harmonic dampers after the A/C pulley tried to sh!t its pants inside the engine bay. (And while we were there fitted a new front main seal too)
Note: VERY happy to report you do not need to remove the radiator to complete this work, just the fan + shroud and steering damper.
We custom made a pulley holder to torque that main pulley-crank bolt to 490-500Nm

2. Once the boring work was complete we moved onto the fun upgrades and fitted two standard height heavy duty front coil springs and 10mm ARB spacers as the front suspension was sagging. (Using precision measurement tools, this raised the arch-flare-to-tyre clearance from a mere 3 fingers to 7.5 chunky fingers)

To ensure this work was done to spec, we threw it down some trails with (deeper than expected) bog holes.
(gentlemen, why is the deeper water side always on the side of the air intake?)
(Also, can confirm 30 year old door seals still do their job)

This is the way.
Agreed! I started driving at about 12 in my dad's CJ7 back in the gravel pits. By 14, I could back a boat trailer down a sloped 100 yard ramp like a pro...my mom would tell me that if I could get the boat to the water (15' Boston Whaler), she'd ride shotgun so I could do it. Ramp was only 10 houses from ours, so she'd get it down there and I'd do the backup duties!

And my project of the day...working on a drawer setup with 2 modules for a sleeping platform and fridge perch. I decided to go custom and do it myself with the inside tire mount (I have the LRA tank). I do have a swing out bumper, but I prefer not to have too much stuff hanging off of the back if I don't absolutely need the inside space. My goal is to have the front module behind the passenger seat (and fridge module too) easily removable in case I need to pop a seat or two in the middle row. To build this, I used the Tnutz extrusions and hardware...nice and solid! I'll bolt it to the aluminum bars that will be mounted to existing mount points, so no drilling through the floor. I'll also add some wings to cover the sides to tidy up a bit. Next choice is if I go bamboo plywood for a cool look (and strength), or stick with a finished birch plywood and rhino-liner or similar.
