What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

In my opinion for a boosted application yes! Is it necessary no lots of guys running stock gaskets on a turbo truck with zero issues. If I am machining both surfaces than why not it’s added insurance as far as I am concerned. I don’t have any long term evidence to support this as I only started using there gaskets a couple years ago.
Is cometic better then oem?

Cometic/ARP combo very commonplace in high-boost 2jz setups, so there's probably something to that!

How was dealing with your insurance on the loss?
I have progressive so they are paying for the damages I should have my other one up and running by summer... They tried to salvage it but I was very firm that they better give me the money and make it right because the say the damages are more than the truck which we all know they are worth more than 5000 ...this is my 2nd time someone has damaged my rig....my insurance knows that is not an option...I can be scary I guess 😂 😂 that's what the adjuster said and made it one dollar under the amount so it will be paid for and I don't like mechanics so I do my work with my caregiver.

Over the past weeks:
- new water pump (and thermostat, hoses, belts while at it). Broke coolant temp sensor, replaced it, but I suspect it is bad, as IDLE is high now (drops to normal if I disconnect the sensor). Need to get all the stuff out of the way in order to replace it again - but strange a rockauto part would be bad.
- new gas tank (from Parts geek). Old one rusted a leak on the seam - may be fixable. Had to disconnect the drive shaft, super hard to loosen those nuts (I suspect they were loctite-ed).
- Replaced brake lines behind tank (rusted). Broke LSP valve bleeder, of course at the very last step of bleeding all brakes. So bypassed it LSP, seems to brake just fine (maybe better).
- new exhaust (after the cat's Y, also from Parts geek). Had to use angle grinder to cut the rusted nuts.
- rust proofing (I forgot to hose down after snow driving (salt!!!) 2 years ago - hence all the undercarriage rust).

So yeah, I lot of crawling under the truck... but it looks a WHOLE lot better now!

I had/have Progressive too and when my 1997 Collector's Edition (3x locked) was stolen the adjuster was trying to tell me it was worth about $5K!! And he was being a real dick. He was basically telling me that I probably stole it myself...anyway, it was a nightmare and eventually I mentioned the 'L' word (lawyer) and they came around.

Did you just use some spray paint on your undercarriage? What did you use to treat the rust?

I need to do the same.

Haven't heard that one before, I like it!

Well yesterday I welded a patch over a huge exhaust leak on my 80 so it doesn't sound like a clapped out BMW E36 anymore, it just sounds like a clapped out Land Cruiser now. That should last it until I can redo the whole system. Also shampoo'd the carpets and gave the interior vinyl and plastics a dosage of hydration and UV protection. Took my main window switch apart to see if that was the reason my driver window won't go down, it isn't but it was the reason my other three windows were intermittent so 50% win I spose. I flushed my heater cores too with CLR and then some hot water, got a lot of stuff out but mostly just confirmed the headgasket is a goner, and likely has been for the last six years haha. Oh well, I've got gaskets and some time coming up, gonna send my spare head out to the local cylinder head place to lighten my wallet in preperation for this job. Don't wanna hang over the engine with all that cash weighing me down.
What do u use the Rube up the plastics along with what you use for UV treatment… I just try to stay out of the direct light.

I wish I could stay out of the UV too but with big fishbowl windows like an 80 series that stuff just finds its way in haha. I have been using the same gallon of Chemical Guys Interior UV coating since 2017, I suspect it has been renamed a couple times but this appears to be the same stuff although the name is different now.

I used steel brushes to remove the "loose" rust as good as possible (wear a mask & googles) - this is most of the work actually. I think Toyota used good steel as it really did not rust very deep, unlike the trailer hitch, which rusted a lot more by comparison.
I used Rust-oleum rust reformer spray (black, $9.99 @ Harbor Freight) for most areas, and I also used rust-oleum rubberized undercoating spray (also black, $8.99 @ Harbor Freight). I used 3 cans of each in total. Time will tell how well they work in the long run, but I now intend to maintain it much better.
I tried to spray in all the holes inside the frame, but hard to cover everything.
I also tried fluid film (Autozone $11.99), but I did not like it on the outside of the frame - as it stay wet and greasy. I did use up the spray can on the chain for the spare wheel and some inside frame members.

Here is what I do for rust on a frame.

Clean first to get the grime off the frame
Spray on Krud Kutter (now know Rust-Oleum Rust Dissolver Trigger Spray Gel). Great for vertical surfaces.
Let it sit for >30 minutes.
Rinse with water
Wire Brush it.
Repeat.

Krud Kutter will dissolve rust, not just cover it, and given enough applications, will result in clean steel.

Clean with a solvent
Paint with Rust-Oleum Primer
Paint with Rust-Oleum Top Coat.

I think I used Semi-Gloss Black Enamel.

I then spray everything liberally with Fluid Film. Anytime I get under my LX450, I usually have a can of Fluid Film with me.

I am not a fan of using a rubberized undercoating. It just traps water and hides rust. Just a huge no go for me.

Finished the swing out from @SUMMIT CRUISERS Jr. Highly recommend it, Garrett has a high quality product and is great to work with.

Just need a few more lug nuts and a center cap. If anyone has a center cap in good condition for sale, PM me.

Damn I just threw two away a few weeks ago cause I wasn’t willing to find replacements 😢 I’ll take it all to the grave from now on.
