The dunes of Tunisia was hard on birfs for both 80 and 60 series

4 - 80 series birf failures on our trip

3 on the red now POS HDJ81

I can now claim 2 broken 80 series birf to my credits along with several other 80 parts.

And 1 on this HDJ80

We were down to only a short birf so some African modifications were needed. Sand tightens all tolerances

Neither just extremely demanding on vehicles. All of our vehicles were diesels with turbos Im thinking gas would be a joke.

For me after trail and error sand dunes with 80 conditions are:
1. reduce your air pressure in the tiers to 8-10 (cooper STT Pro 33'' ) psi this is critical
2. CDL on
3. trans in Low + 4.56 reduction
4. Gear in Drive with overdrive off
5. front and rear diff locks OFF!!!


and weeeeehhhee it flays the problem is that some dunes are a knife and then you flay with the brides and when you hit the ground you can brake something

But WHY? wouldnt they (Toyota) have done it that way being that it would be waay simpler? Personally I wouldn't..just sounds like trouble

Don't drive it much in the salt road weather but took it to deliver a rack tonight and loved the ride. Whenever I have to go long stretches without my 80 I am reminded how awesome it is when I get back in it. Took it through the woods for a cool down on the way home.

Mad respect to all you guys really using your 80s in the wild. Put 3k miles on mine over thanksgiving week mostly city, interstate and some national park forest roads. 80 made it all worthwhile.

Began putting the final touches on my rear swing-outs. For a pivot I used a Class 1 Hitch Pin with a #13,000 rating for a side load.

Is that propane tank going to be directly in your line of rear-view mirror and make your truck wider for navigating trails?

The propane tank is mounted on the ladder, on the side. I’ve had no problems seeing with it there, but I’m getting ready to “deep six” the ladder, and the tank will go inside or on the roof. I usually only have the tank on when I’m going/coming from a overnight run.

The factory also didn't make them with steel bumpers, lift kits, 35" tires, larger output alternators, air compressors, fridges, tablet mounts, usb ports, backup cameras, dual batteries, etc, but here we are.

As an electrician, I personally don't see anything wrong with putting 3 wire leads together, as long as the fuse links themselves are left separate to do their individual duties. My guess is they are separated because that's how the links were initially ordered in bulk.

Any damage or loss of life occurred from taking my advice with more than one grain of salt is not my responsibility however.
