Back to black project, axles and frame rails de-rust and paint. The axles and trailing arms were pure scabby mud and rust, exactly like the exhaust in the 2nd pic. The frame rails weren't too bad, considering. I've been meaning to do this for years, but following the front axle rebuild, and with OME coils going in any day now, the time arrived.

about 20 hours so far, but it's not finished, maybe another 10 hours to go.

Did you do the hike to the ruins from Rogers Trough? Was in the area on Sunday and did FS252. The area is being taken over by side by sides:(

I did hike to the ruins and that creek was flowin'! Had to cross it about 20x. What a beautiful area, waterfalls and crystal pools shadowed by towering red cliffs...we saw 3 people! Hahahaa.

Those side by side deals eat so much dust and are so loud I don't know how they're fun? The occupants are always bundled like they came off te set of mad max.

Removed stock bumper to make way for install of Trail Tailor custom and warn winch. Mounted solenoid in engine bay and routed winch lines to front. She's ready and waiting, just need paint to dry on the bumper and get my winch rope from Southeast Overland.

I used to know a guy who had a rig just like that. He even went wheeling with me a time or two.

Haven't seen him in forever. Last I heard he was blaming his tiny tires on lack of overhead space in his garage, but he had just put some roof rack on his junk.

Weird.

Every once in a while someone catches a glimpse of his rig reflecting off the sunset...as a coyote barks in the distance...

Not the weekend but...

Ok, been a day or two and done some little things that add up. Purchased new wheel center caps, installed aftermarket horns that makes the Rig sound like a vehicle instead of a Shriners Clown Car, installed Marathon custom seat covers. FYI Marathon seat covers are as advertised, I am impressed and will order some for the RAM 2500.

I have a reputable paint man and have ordered all necessary replacement pieces and parts to insure the Rig will look like new or better upon completion of this major restoration task.

Hey, I like those seat covers. Where did you get them? Directly from Marathon?

Wonder if they would fit the LX450 as well? I don't know what the difference is between LC and LX seats TBH.

NVM, I saw in your sig you have an LX as well. :P

Removed my front calipers for cleaning and rebuild while the blue one watched. Found the DS caliper was sticking, causing one pad to grind down in to the rotor. Thanks to reading Mud, I'm confident I can salvage the pistons and rebuild the caliper. Never heard the wear indicator squeal. I'm in there anyway for the birf rebuild (and now replacement). After seeing the axles grooved from the shaft seal, I ordered some Marlin Crawler shaft seals in hopes they ride in an offset location. We'll see.

Yes directly from Marathon. Great quality, excellent customer service and a little patience on the customers part, but well worth the wait.

Yes presently own a LX450 and these are the covers for that Rig.

I was doing that yesterday and the other pistons kept coming back out. I only had one c clamp though. Guess I needed two.

Fwiw I pop the top off the master cylinder. Never had this issue when compressing slowly

Started her up. Engine lower refresh with seals and gaskets done. Upper rebuild with new gaskets and seals done. Timing so far off that I will tackle it next weekend. Bought a timing light for moral support. Getting excited about driving her around the neighborhood. Pulled the engine in October and finished in February. I now consider myself a :banana: shade tree mechanic. I have a lot of respect for people who wrench for a living. Everything took four times as long as I would have liked but I never rushed the repairs. Got what I believe to be a great mechanic to do the upper and check the lower for issues. All the reconstruction was done by myself and a couple buddies helped with the heavy lifting. I owe them some . Finally, I owe a debt of gratitude to my teenage daughter. Without her, the EGR pipe would NEVER have been reattached to the block.

Mistakes were made along the way but I have a better understanding of my truck and its issues.

The only negative now is that Comet will not mark her territory with various fluids everywhere we go.

I would like to thank the Academy for this award and......:rimshot:

.....call @beno for your parts and expert advise.

Started in on my hill billy Rustoleum paint job. After only two coats I'm feeling pretty good about it! Gonna put on at least a couple more so I can get a good wetsand, polish, and wax at the end. The anxiety and nail biting is almost over! Also going to plastidip the flares black.

A lot of my friends know me as "mechanically inclined" but I've always believed it's more that I'm brave/dumb enough to take anything apart.. IMO that's exactly how you learn, and it's not that I'm inherently better at working on cars, I've just had more experience taking stuff apart.

Good work, and I applaud you deciding to tackle this yourself, and farm out the high-risk stuff

Went wheeling in the hills just south of Shasta Dam. Watched them dump water from all the spillways for the first time since the early 90s. Town is flooding pretty good, thankfully we don't live by the river.

This looks like a cool little spot! I've been meaning to head that way to do some exploring, do you mind sharing where that is?

Mike
