Is MIG welding the way to go? I'm going to take a course at Camosun. They also do TIG, but MIG should cover most of my needs, right? (like auto body or building bumpers or frame repair). Any recomendations. TIA

MIG is the way you want to go if you're mostly just going to weld steel. Chromo, aluminum, even stainless, etc... is difficult/expensive to weld with MIG. I have the MillerMatic 175, and I love it. At work we have the Miller DVI (dual voltage input), Also very good (but more expensive). Make sure you get a 220v welder with gas. Check out KMS tools, they seem to have the best prices and great service. TIG is also more expensive to get set up. Have fun with your course!

for you...;)

yes MIG is the way to go. simple and an available set up. TIG is nice, but aplication for the "everyman" is limited.

all around MIG is your best bet. Alu, stainless and other alloys are fine with MIG as well.

if your just learning go for mig...it can stainless and also alum but you have to buy some other goodies just to get started and a push pull gun if you want to do alot of aluminum...but i think mig would still be best if its just for bumpers, auto body ect. buy the biggest welder you can afford as well...iv used the cheap s*** (miller 110 v at school) and also the industrial quality (PAC energy assembly line)....its night and day difference...i wouldnt wast money on the flux cored welders...go with gas, its been a while but from memory an argon/c02 mix worked best for me...enjoy the welding class:cheers:
