Been practicing my welding a bit. So, always looking for projects...

I have a bunch of rebars in the garden that I use for tree stakes. Cheap and last forever. In the past, I've had a hard time taking them out when really deep (water helps). So I figured I'd put a T-top on the things to help take them out by hand or even with the Hi-lift and also to prevent the guy wires from slipping off. And, also good welding practice on T-joints with circular rods, playing with gaps etc.

I assume the rebars I have are generic steel, maybe even recycled trash steel. I don't imagine those are carefully-monitored alloys. And I've read some places that they don't weld well. But I've had very good luck welding them with flux core actually. Seems very strong and pounding on them with a sledge did not affect the welds.

I'm thinking there is a bunch of stuff around the place I can do with rebars, especially given they are 1/2 the price of weldable steel rods at HD. (And have that rugged cruiserhead look too, of course... :) )

So, wondering: have I been particularly lucky with the few I tried or are they generally OK to weld in your experience? (I have seen some more expensive ones advertised as "weldable" but I'm talking the garden (ah!) variety here.)

but wouldn't those have to be the specifically Weldable kind, per code? I'm talking about the regular ones, meant to be tied.

They are all mild steel. No big deal at all to weld.

good to know. Read some odd stories about welds shattering when dropped etc and huge variability in quality but that could be the Internet for you. Mine look good so far so I'll keep doing it until I find out otherwise.

I'm sure there is a huge variance in quality. And, any steel can shatter if subjected to too much heat during the weld. Besides, even if it doesn't work, it's not like you are going to die from the T handle on a piece of rebar in your garden popping off.

the concrete guys here have a clamp they hook to it and yank them out ,but they dont get any welding practice
