i am going to bite the bullet and by a welder, I will need it to weld body panels together and also the front saginaw plate onto the frame. What type of welder at a reasonable cost? I see some $700-$800 welders weld up to 3/8ths thick. will this be enough for the frame?

Spence,

Check out the tools/home improvement section. Tons of welding info and discussion there. Search that section and all your questions will be answered.
I would go with a 220 mig set up, Miller or Hobart. Comes with the gas hookups.

a weldor rated for 3/8's should be more then enough on the frame as its only about 1/8 material...millers tend to be good welders, iv been using Kempi welders for a little while now as well and they seem to work great..dont know if they are sold in NA though

hey man,

not sure if you've got any linde gas locations near you, but i picked up a used millermatic 175 in great condition from them last summer for 500 bones. picked up a tank from welder's supply or someplace like that for ~80.

if you head to charlotte anytime, i know that their shop there has used ones in stock from all the racing teams.

I just did A LOT of looking into this.. Go with a Hobart 187, the hobart forums are a huge help as well.. I got mine at northern for $650 shipped with a free cart.. You can find even better deals but I wanted it now.. I compaired with the Hobart 175 and 180 as well as the Miller units and I can assure you this is the best bet for many reason.. Either trust me on this of search for the 187 on the Hobart forums and see what you think.. As a side note, I had a co2 bottle sittinghere so I run straight co2 and I've been happy with that..

I agree with tmblweed. Hobart is a great value in a quality welder. Hobart is owned by Miller and is basically the same welder as a Miller, but at a lower price. Most parts are interchangable. A small 220 unit (like the 187) will do almost anything.

Run a search, this has been covered and recovered on this forum. Not to reopen the Hobart, Miller, Lincoln debate; Hobart is the low end Miller just like Blue Point is the low end Snap On tool. When I was doing my search before buying a mig welder, I found a few Hobart parts are not as well designed and more likely to cause a problem than on the Miller---confirmed with my local dealer. I bought a Lincoln to fit my needs.
