Water Temp Sending Unit 1F

This is also posted in the 40 section cause they get a little more trafic. But ultimately I have a better feeling about you guys. Being all smart with the old stuff.

I have a 1F in a '65fj45lv.

Ordered a WTSU from Toyota part number: 83420-20010
I was taking a stab in the dark with this order assuming that the correct one was not available.

Before installing I took a pic. New WTSU is on the left and old on right.
New WTSU says "6F" and old says "5-B". Both are Toyota and both are 12v.

I'm not getting any type of read on my temp gauge. Pretty sure the gauge works cause when I ground it out it moves from Past hot all the way to Cold.

Question: Should I buy a new temp guage that is specific for my new WTSU? Or is there something else going on?

Where did you get the part number Dave?

I believe it was the same sender for 63+/- to 72+/- for the 40.

The sender for 73 or so and later works opposite of the early sender. So, if that's the sender you have, the gauge would stay pegged on hot and go down a little bit when it warms up.

If you want, grab a resistance reading (hot would be better, with the gauge wire off) between the terminal and thesender body and I'll compare it to the senders I have.

The early silver face instrument cluster (FJ25 - '62 or so) uses a different sending unit but I don't think you've got that.

I take back what I said about getting the info for the WTSU from the 25 section. I was origionally thinking about the Thermostat part numbers.

Ordered the part from cruiserdan. I provided him with a link to SOR and told him I wanted the same part.

I have the gauge connected to the WTSU and nothing happens.

However, I will get the numbers for you.

Haven't seen that thread before.

I guess my gauge isn't doing nothing afterall. It does go from far past hot to hot when I start everything up.

I'll get back with more info.

At starting I am getting 37-38 ohms.

When I hook up the wire to the gauge I am getting 1 (full resistence).

After driving around for a while I am now getting a read of 39.3

I'll check later on tonight but that's in the ballpark for cold. What year does the part number work out to be?

I think mine was marked 1J as far as I know it doesn't correspond to anything. Are you sure you've got a good connection to the block and a ground from the block to frame and body?

The resistance should go up as the temp goes up, it's not linear so most of the change is around the operating temperature. This is a sender for a '70 resistance on the left, temp on the right.
