I just got the water pump off my 3.4L and am contemplating what to use for a gasket... The new one came with a paper gasket but the instructions call for FIPG. What does everyone else use?

I'd like to put the new one on this evening so some quick replys would be great!

I used the silicone sealer on my 3.4, but have also used the paper gasket with good luck on other toyota engines..... so, whichever really...

Thanks, from what I read there is a difference between the silicon and FIPG. I'm thinking I'll use some blue permatex with the paper gasket.

Use the FIPG. That's what most mechanics use, that's what the book calls for, and that's what seems to work the best.

EDIT: I've been using FIPG for years on all of my previous Toyota's. Never had a problem.

For the record I had a problem, thats where the pump was leaking from. The weep hole was clean.

2x on the FIPG. Haven't had any leaks from the couple I have done.

I have heard that the timing belt and water pump should be changed at the same time, if any anitfreeze gets on the timing belt it will shorten its life.
I figure that while I am in there I will change everything and forget about it for the next 100K miles!

I did everthing, belt, pump and idlers... it had 120000 miles and no record of it being done.

now that you are done, are you going to post up any pictures of your ride?

very clean looking 4-runner! looks like a great find.
