OK, so how do you weld stuff without it warping all over ?

Go slow. Weld a little then move. I've heard of success with quenching the weld with a wet rag. Try to keep the heat out of the panel. TIG welding puts less heat in than MIG. Thinner filler wire with the MIG helps too.

Welding sheet WILL shrink it. You'll have to stretch it back out with a hammer and dolly.

That's been what I've read. I've been reading a lot trying to get good at patch panels. I expect experience will come with a lot of practice.

I found spot welds work best. Also working back and forth till you get it all filled in.

I also used a wet rag.

Also .023 wire. Also use a good wheel to grind it afterwards, moving all over the place quickly and evenly. If you concentrate on one area too much it will warp. Keep the metal cool.

Thanks guys, I made my bumpers OK but warped the piss out of my welding cart. Thinner gage metal I guess? So I'll try the rag trick and a lot more practice. Thanks again.

Use Mig process, .o23 wire, turn waay down for that nice sizzling bacon sound. Get the metal fitting up perfectly "fit is it, tight, clean shiney and brite" and super clean.

Mark out 1" inch increments with soapstone or sharpie. Put a tic tac sized spot weld on each inch mark.

Then, run no welding beads...just put down one little stack of tic tacs at a time.

Do it like this. Put down a tic tac....wait...when it stops glowing red in your mask, move a little bit and then put down another tic tac.

I have it down to the point where I have almost zero distortion.

I also don't like the wet rag deal unless you want to shrink the metal or cause it to crack.

Tig does heat less, but can heat more in the hands of a non welder but is preffered in the hands of a trained weldor.

Check out a Ron Covell or Ron Fournier vidoe - forget Jesse James, they are the masters of sheetmetal.
