Was gonna get a cap wrench for my gas cans.

Fifty Bucks! Plus shipping! For a plastic effing wrench!

My cousin mentioned something so I dug a Husky 'boa constrictor' rubber strap wrench out of the bottom of the toolbox. Works like a champ and might just be useful on the trail too!

Have you seen the Rocking K Cap Wrenches at the Southeast Overland WEB STORE? $29.99, made in the US, nearly indestructible, and sold by a MUD vendor. I'm posting from my phone or I'd give you a direct link.

I don't understand why all you guys have so much trouble opening your cans. Yeah, every once in a while I need to implement a "death grip", but I've never had a problem.

What gives?

Obviously, while we are mere humans, you were born on Kryption.
One quick word of advice, avoid glowing green or red minerals.

I've had some expand so much that there was no way I could get them open without some 'assistance.' Often it is when the gas is poured in a cool atmosphere and then expands with sun. Poof = my caps ain't comin' off.

I live in the desert, and have had my cans expand to the point they are about to burst out of their holders in my rear bumper, but I've never had a problem opening them.

Maybe you guys are putting too much crank on them to begin with

Side note: those rubber strap wrenches are great. I used one on my alternator pulley to rotate my engine while I was working on the ignition timing.

Seems no matter how soon I cut off filling them, when they get hot, they expand and leak unless you crank the s*** out of 'em. This was true of metal GI cans when I lived in Vegas as well. With those I uses a crescent wrench to open 'em. The strap wench works great and is a handy tool to have in the box.

Dude I think maybe you might be the only one who uses methamphetamines on their gas cans... maybe that's why the lids come off so easy for you!... or perhaps that's were you get your super human strength? ;)

Seriously though my experience has been either the cans leak but the caps come off easy, or they seal well but I'm popping blood vessels in my head to get them open .

I still think he's from Krypton.

Perhaps, but why would Superman need fuel? Or meth?

You get tired of swatting the LC down the trail with your pinkie, besides even if you're Superman, it's fun to drive a Cruiser. As for meth, why would anyone need meth?

:meh:

Mine don't leak, either

You have Scepter MFCs?

I don't know why you're fortunate, but suffice to say, I and apparently a fair number of others, have been forced the crank down the caps of the cans to stop leakage at the caps. When done this makes them nearly impossible to open with hand strength.

Scepter and others offer a wrench for opening them, which reinforces the notion that it's a common issue and since I'm a cheap bastard I'll use my strap wrench rather than pay $30 for a purpose-built plastic thing.

So, count your lucky stars and just go toss a strap wrench in your toolbag 'cause it's a handy tool. That way if you're suddenly overcome by weakness as the result of a rare tropical bug bite you'll still be able to open your cans.

I had a couple of Scepters strapped on their sides on my roof rack and they swelled so much that they bent the roof rack under the cans. Of course, they were strapped down pretty snug so they wouldn't move around.

I've got a 4+ Manafre bumper and can rack, don't think they'll bend it. 1/4" or so steel.

The man of steel drives a 55. Who knew.
