Great news for forest visitors - the Magruder Road (Forest Service Road #468, aka the Montana Road) is now open for the season!

Magruder Road is a steep, primitive Forest Service road that is not maintained for through travel. The road is open seasonally based on snow levels, typically thawing out around the Fourth of July.

The Magruder Road runs 101 miles from Elk City, Idaho to Darby, Montana. It is a spectacular drive, but visitors must be prepared for the journey. The road is suitable for high-clearance vehicles, pickup trucks, motorcycles, and mountain bikes. Pulling a trailer along this route is not recommended. Travel time varies, but it typically takes between 8 and 10 hours to travel the entire route. A two-day drive with an overnight stay at one of the dispersed campsites along the Magruder Road makes for a great trip!

Visitors are highly encouraged to contact the Red River Ranger District in Elk City (208-842-2245) before planning a trip on the Magruder Corridor. Helpful staff at the district office can let you know latest road updates and give you tips and information so you can have a fun and safe journey.
