divemedic, Where do you keep your spare now?

Right now I keep it in my storage shed, along with the factory door mount. If I go out camping or wheeling, and a reasonable chance exists to need the spare, I simply bolt up the mount to the door and slide my spare on. It's about a 10 minute process.

This mitigates the chance of some jackass who is paying attention to their phone/TV/doing make-up instead of the road rear ending my tire at 5 km/hr traffic. This would be enough to destroy the doors and potentially the glass. This also keeps any would-be thieves from taking my wheel. Large tires are very expensive here and I'm concerned with some of the Americans stealing it (not so much Okinawans).

That being said, I live on a small island right now, if I get a flat driving on the road it's not a huge deal to call a friend/wife/taxi. When I move back to the states, I'll likely keep my spare in the trunk in case I have a flat while tooling around town.

What would your objection to swing outs be if they are integrated with the rear door opening?

Realize not directed my way, but....

First, blocks indicators.

Yes, I realize there'll be provisions for bumper mounted, but if the 'kit' doesn't include the Portugese spec, blacked out lower indicators, along with harness (both of which I regretfully liquidated for postage expense) then it creates an issue that may outweigh the perceived issues it solves.

Second, I don't need dual swing outs.

Don't 'need' either swing out since intended for DD, tire is fine on the door, and already on an island in the urban sea of 4WP domestics that have more needless bolt ons, so don't have to compete to find my spot in the lot.

Don't know what I'd even mount on the LH door swing out.....

Both those are reasoning enough for me to think a rear bumper shell, that corresponds with the front I'd like to have, are better suited for my intentions than a dual swing out.

Lastly, expense for something I don't need.

Cruisers are needy. I do need a front and rear bumper......need a lot of other things, too. Assuming the expense of a powder coated dual swing out is in the $1.8-2k range and a powder coated shell at $.9-1k, that's a grand that could go towards front or any number of other items.

I realize we're talking much smaller production runs, but they're no stranger to optioned purchasing, from bare shells to fully outfitted, powder coated offerings.

I could live with the holes where spindles would go, even.

This may have been in a previously and I missed it:

Is the receiver separate? Is it available without a bumper purchase? It’ll be a while before I’m able to spend much on my ‘new’ 75, but I need a receiver hitch, was thinking of fabbing one up, but if you’ve already got them, I’d be interested.

This is where I got mine for my BJ74:
Fj40 receiver hitch

Same mounting hole pattern as 40 series

It sure could be!

Divemedic,

It seems like it would depend on what type of car you were rear ended by. My rear tire sits high enough that any car would hit my rear bumper or under. A taller vehicle with or with out the tire is likelyto still destroy your doors and windows though

Perhaps you're correct. I'm only speaking from my experiences. I've seen two trucks significantly damaged due to a tire carrier's isolated contacts. One was due to an inattentive driver who rear ended a friend after assuming they merged from a parking lot. the other was caused from backing into a parking pole which was obstructed by said spare tire. I would rather not risk it. Just my opinion.

While this do-dad won't prevent someone from rear-ending you, it does help prevent one from backing into an obstacle.
In my opinion it is money well spent on a long wheel base, RHD Cruiser.

^ absolutely agree, I picked my head-unit with the addition of a camera in mind. Mostly because I now have two children. One is now running around like a drunk midget :D

No damage to my vehicle, nor tire on door.....not even a worthy scratch in the PC.

Purchased as powder coated 'base' bumper, with optional cutouts for back up floods....for desert racing at high speed in reverse.

Yup

Yummy.

Are those LED's 24v compatible?
Most LED's can handle from 8-32 volts.
All of the interior/exterior lighting on my 77 Series has been converted to LED's.

Damn, that is one sexy looking rear end! Very nice fit and finish, well done!
Always like to see the final product. Is the receiver integral to the bumper, or is it attached to the
rear cross member?

I'm interested to know if the spare tire mount adjusts laterally. I'd like to run a 35-37" spare tire and have it adjusted as close to the smaller, left side door w/o obstructing it.

And I wouldn't mind seeing a "stop" on the tire carrier, in it's closed position, that could help minimize damage to the door, should I be rear ended or back up into a tree. =)
