Once upon a time, in a land.....well right here actually....unistrut used to offer a roof rack system. It was not cheap, but damn, it was the only roof rack that would stand up to anything. These things would not let go, shift, vibrate, rattle, or fall off no matter what you did.
I know, I tried to almost rip it off my roof on a tree once, luckily I failed
The cool part is that you could bolt on unistrut and make anything you wanted out of it and bolt it to anything you wanted. Add any kind of setup you could think of. 01052011_Unistrut_US Only catch, and the reason why they stopped making them is because it needed a gutter rail on a vehicle. How many vehicles come with those now......... none.
I think I remember they were being sold for $145 a rail (so 2 gutter mounts and a cross bar), they were not cheap but I've had mine on the truck for the past 7 years and they are rock solid. I've changed the configuration over time and have put way too much weight on them and no issues.

Since they are discontinued, I was looking at possibly fabricating the mount system, it would be inexpensive enough because it was actually fairly simple. Then you can either get the strut and other hardware yourself or through me.

Any interested parties?

Now, this is also the roof rack system that Greg used on his 74 to Alaska, other than a custom rack like Glenn had made, there is nothing that is as strong andversatilee as the unistrut setup.

I shamelessly stole the pic from somewhere else, they are actually almost impossible to find anymore even used. I found 2 for sale, one in Australia and one in New Zealand.

Wow Kim, at this rate I'll have to start a running tab for you :D
I'll start working on some drawings soon, I also don't want to have any issues with copyrights with Unistrut so I have to make sure the design is different.

I'll see if there is enough interested parties. THe issue you have with yours is that you have a very tall roof, even more than the JDM 62.

Yes, I just remembered that. My plan was to make my own using the current ones as a template. I see the Aussies tend to use 8 feet for a full length basket and 3 for a 1/2 length one. Right now I only have 6 on my full length.

I want to have a better look at the clamping design on those unistrut feet. Mine have the tendency to bend up the gutter rail. I'll show you Thursday, as I got the basket on right now. Got any close-up pics of the unistrut ones clamping onto the gutter?

Possibly interested as well. I really dislike my Thule bars and want a good party platform up top, and can swamp out the RTT for a basic platform, the Thule basket I have (if I keep it, it's kinda chee$y really), still have (removable) access for the sunroof, perhaps solar panels, lights, other stuff, etc etc etc.

All pending a large financial influx, 'cruiser budget is quite shot for awhile now, stupid houses....

It's called vehicle maintenance. ;) The problem is that all the other maintenance tends to get in the way, especially if you set a precedent. Wife maintenance trumps them all. So listen up you young single guys. Buy your toys before you get hooked. If you ever get womanwinked into selling them to pay for a wedding/nesting, then you are screwed. :meh:

Yeah. That's why I got the 'cruiser before I settled down. Didn't wait till after like some did and have to settle for a Datsun. Lol

Don't be too sure of yourself youngun. You've a long way to go yet. My youngest is now 16. The other two are adults. You still got at least 10-20 to serve with a "cross over" (aka station wagon/mini van) hanging over your head. :flipoff2:

I was actually agreeing with most everything you posted! 5 yrs. ago I had a 32 foot sailboat, a 18 foot ski boat, a 1100cc sportbike, a BJ60, etc etc etc. Now I have a bad back , a rapidly receding hairline and an unpredictable restroom schedule. Booyah.

I think unistrut has a subsidiary in Coquitlam .

We are keeping it to one I think.. I was sitting on a 25 kilowatt radar just yesterday spinning around microwaving the nads... Sorry mat, thought this was about 'eunuch strut'...

Thank you for bringing us back on track, guys, go find your own thread to whine and bitch about kids, mid life, bladder issues, hair that is regrouping from your forehead to your ass, and any other maladies.

Yes, Unistrut has a branch in Coquitlam, just off United Blvd. I have an account there. I asked them about the roof racks, but they main office ordered a halt on production about 5 years ago due to the large amount of new vehicles being built without rain gutters. You could still, at that time, bring them in from Australia, because they were still being made there. About 3 years ago that stopped. Now the actual roof rack system (SP 150, 250 and whatever other numbers they had) was always Patent Pending.
When I asked at the Coquitlam office, they didn't care what I do as long as I kept buying strut :D
This stuff is awesome, the amount of brackets and weird things they have is amazing, you can build almost anything out of it and the best part, it's engineered and approved by all engineers and designers when used in installations.

use there rollers and make an expanding slide out one, and yes they have some nice and cheaper sliding systems

Unitstrut is the s***e. Yes, I used some of their products on the BJ74 to kit it for Alaska. The roof rack stuff was just getting in the hard to find category when I was getting ready.

Mat, I can't say that I will be looking for any roof rack stuff right now, but more power to you if you can get those feet back in production.
