Is it still considered ok to steam-clean an engine compartment and engine? Anything to be aware of? My truck is spotless inside and out, but the engine compartment has 70K miles of accumulated dirt and dust all over it (no oil or vapor though).

I try not to get carried away with a pressure washer but I generally use soak the engine bay with some sort of engine degreaser (Foaming Engine Brite, Simple Green or citrus based) for 20-30 mins and hose off with good results. If certain areas need more cleaning let dry and repeat.

Hose it off?? Do you mean with your garden hose or with a pressure washer?

If so, I'll give the Foaming Engine Brite (if I can find it here in the boondocks) a try. Sure will be easier that trusting my ride to another unknown.

Garden hose is fine, pressure washer will work but don't hold the nozzle tip close to any engine components or electronics.

Engine degreaser can be found at most any parts store. It doesn't have to be the foaming type but it sticks well. I've had good luck with full concentration Simple Green as well.
