I've just been given a 3 year old 27" TV (JVC flat front CRT). Supposedly it worked fine until 2 days ago. It now shows a yellow/green static screen when turned on. The onscreen menu is faintly visible in the background.

Is this worth messing with, or should I just trash it now? CRT likely damaged or is this a simpler fix?

TV was my neighbor's. He just bought a new flat panel to replace it. He's an older guy and couldn't move the old one by himself so I brought it to my house to set out with the trash. Before I do I thought I'd see if any of the Mud experts had any advice.

TV's that just plain don't turn on are usually easy to fix. When they do turn on and do funky stuff, it's usually a sign that there's something expensive wrong with them. Usually. :D

I dunno. Call a local repair place. I fixed my 15 year old 27" panasonic for $90. It showed one line of blue pixels on the screen. Just for grins, I called the local repair place, and he said "Yeah, it happens all the time, easy fix".

Andrew -

Before you trash it try hooking it up to a VCR/DVD through the RCA jacks/Video inputs and then see how the picture is. By doing this you're eliminating the tuner module from the equation. If the pic shows up clear you simply need a new tuner via ebay. If it turns out to be the tuner and you don't want to spend the $ for a new one then just utilize an old VCR to change channels. Also, most TV's are modular and it's pretty easy to find cheap boards online and then just plug and play.

Good idea. I'll try that. It's still sitting in my garage because it's a very awkward 90 lbs or so and I've been too lazy to haul it to the curb. For it's size, it's by far the heaviest tv I've seen since the old wood console models.

Since it's my thread I don't feel bad about hijacking - did you St. Louis guys ever start your own tlca chapter or are you still a part of TAC?

I think some of the guys have been getting together for drinks. I haven't made any of the meetings. A few of us went wheeling several months ago but other that that I don't think they're really moving forward. Last I read a few of them got into a pissing match over who was the coolest or something. Are you making it to Flat Nasty next month?

I wish. I've got to either get my weber carb sorted out or get the aisin off the shelf and sent in for rebuild. Neither is going to happen in the next couple weeks.

I've also got a trip to Ozark Nat'l Forest in November that I'm trying to be ready for. Not enough vacation this year to do both. I assume you're taking the 80 down again?
