My friend has a earlier Tundra with the soft suspension. He spends a bunch of time driving bad roads in Idaho, but also makes long trips in the truck. He likes the basic truck but says it really sucks in rough country (he is a former Tacoma drvier).

He is thinking that, rather than sell and replace it, he could beef up the suspension and would like a little lift as well. What system do you all recommend, given his type of use?

Thanks in advance.

His aftermarket suspension options are basically the same as with the Tacoma. Examples here:

The high end adjustable height coilovers, such as KING, Camburg, and Donahoe are rebuildable. Bilstein also offers a nice product which is adjustable but not rebuildable.

The rear can get an add a leaf and some 5100 bilstein shocks.

He could most likely clear 285 75 16 (metric 33) but then he may not be happy with his gearing. I would stick with 265 75 16 (metric 32) but that is just a personal preference.

Body lift or a drop bracket type lift kit would allow clearance of even larger tires if he's so inclined but this doesn't sound like his plan.

Some good information at tundrasolutions.com

Thank you - passed along to my friend.

i have never really looked at the earlier tundras but i know they sell leveler kits for the front suspension on the newer tundras that isn't too expensive.
