What dates are you travelling? I'd sure like to go but I dunno if I can swing the time and expense right now. What's Peter doing? I think he mentioned driving a 60 series down???

Ya he's driving a 60 down. I expect we leave Wednesday the 4th.

To tent or to sleep inside....

Well the thread lives on and so does troopy. I get prepped and pumped for rubythaw this year I'm digging into some work.

1hdt swap
Rebuild h55 transmission (grinding into second gear)
Building snorkel and whizzy air filter
Maybe an intercooler

Should give me a couple more ponies under the hood. A well built 1hz with turbo and exhaust can put down 150hp to wheels. A well built hdt with the mods I speak of has been able to touch 300ish. Hoping I can feel the difference either way.

Then on my g turbo disaster struck. Broken or cross threaded exhaust stud.... We went to work extracting it and got it out scot free

Paul came and helped out today. He was a life saver in typical Paul fashion Particularly when I tried
To crush him with the trans and t case assembly.

Just can't leave it and enjoy it as is, man your crazy, you must really love pulling wrenches ;)

Ya it was a combination of things really.
-the thirst for more power
- my trans was acting up in 2nd gear
- good time to go through things again. Had a nagging concern with my black box I'll address.
- traded the old turbo hz for body work this past summer

All and all shouldn't be to bad of a program. The list keeps growing though as usual. I'm a lazy bugger without a timeline to hit and out March run provides me just that.

Well lots more tackles today. Tore the transmission down and most everything looks really good upon first inspection. Measured thrust clearance and they were all in spec on all gears. Started measuring a few other things though and closer inspection may have found my culprit of bad second gear shifts.

The 1-2 synchro assembly rides on a spline on the main shaft. This spline has some slop in it. Upon close inspection of the assembly female splines you could see some wear to the point a ridge had formed to one end. I suspect this allowed the assembly to either misalign or mis center when trying to shift.

I also found a worn 3rd gear bushing. Most of the synchro a looked really good but ordered all new anyway. It was an expensive bill for parts but I should have every last thing I need and a bunch of good spares.

This is the black box removed. What a bear this thing was. The clearances for bolt up are so tight. Special tooling and curses are required.

The transmission again takes some special tooling and can be a bear. I had one bearing I had to weld my
Puller to but the rest came out really easily. That main shaft center bearing is a sticky one though. Same one I had trouble with on frenchy one transmission.

This is the 4th trans I've torn into in the past 18 months. Starting to learn the tricks.

Also went after the 1hdt.

Stripped harness
Pulled transmission and converter
Pulled a few other odds and sods.

More progress tonight

Moved turbo to hdt
Moved alternator to hdt
Removed acsd and blocked off
Transferred oil pressure sensor and temp sensor

Tomorrow is flywheel and clutch and bell housing. I'll hold off on timing belt as it was done 60k ago. Beb will be easier once the engine is mounted again. Hopefully this weekend

You probably don't need it, but if you need help with the transmission, or anything for that matter, let me know. I would really like to get some real world experience with a tranny.

once the parts arrive I'll keep everyone posted. They aren't actually that bad…..

Little more work tonight but need a clutch pilot bearing
