Happened across a 4runner lifted etc with a TRD supercharger.
I searched and found several finds on 80's but only 1 on a 3.4Litre Taco. The concern was to be sure that an injector kit was also installed as full throttle tended to lean out the engine.

Does anyone have experience with this conversion on a 3.4Litre?
I'm not up on superchargers as in what controls excessive boost as in is there a sort of wastegate like a turbo would use?

How much power does this unit produce and what sort of boost is safe? Should a person be worried about transmission and transfer case and differential premature failures as this rig looks to have at least 33's on it?
thanks for any and all experience and input
cheers

I wouldn't worry about either the transfer case or the axle differentials. I would be a little concerned about the transmission. I remember a guy on the east coast doing a supercharged 3.4 5VZ-FE and he ended up needing to get a better torque converter. Let me see if I can find that info for you.

Thanks for the links LukeZero.
As I was reading through those links I thought oh my god a 3500 stall converter..haha..try that out on the trail. Also looking at the hp curves, i wish there was a clear torque curve, it sort of made me wonder that if the crossover on hp is around 2300 rpm then for cruising down the highway I'm not so sure it really helps.
It always amazes me the automakers publishing hp numbers at 4800 rpm or whatever...who spends how much time driving at that rpm? Show me a healthy torque curve from 1500 to 2500 rpm cause that's where I do most of my driving.
Anyhow so if a supercharger almost necessitates reworking your valvebody then I can only imagine when the xfer case and diffs come next. In the link you sent I'd like to see how long the driveline holds up on a 3500rpm stall converter or perhaps even the 3000 rpm that they backed off to.
 for the feedback!

duane, I've read about quite a few 3.4 L's w/ superchargers. BUT, is this a belt driven like a Wipple, or is this a Roots type supercharger that TRD puts out? From what I've read the TRD unit has lots of power from the get go(why drag racers use them-power off the line). I have seen the numbers for the new 4.0L in my 07' Taco, and it will take the stock 236hp and pump it up to 305hp, with a related increase in torque. It is set up for bolting to a stock motor, with no exhaust/intake/mods. But at $4500.00 it is out of my reach. I'm pretty shure TRD also made a roots blower for the Supra w/I think a 3.4L. Check out the TRD website

If it is a factory supercharger they are built to work fine with the motor. The only thing is the supercharger is not rebuildible. Also I have been told the biggest tire you want on the 4 Runner is a 31 without moding the axels.

Not necessarily true...it depends on how you drive. If you throw a lot of wheel spin trying to work up something you can blow an axle on 28s. I ran 33s for years with the OEM ADD axles and an ARB Locker up front with no issues. Now I'm running 35s with ORS axles.

I had a 98 Limited 4Runner with a factory TRD supercharger. Ran fine on stock everything. The supercharger is not rebuildable, but you can at least change the oil in the nose cone (there is a write up somewhere). I was on 32's, too (stock suspension). I loved hearing that whine. But I did not like having to fill up with premium gas. MPG was about the same as N/A.

Well FLATU8ER.... I gave it a miss as it was a 5 1/2 hour drive from home, and the owner had bought it, didn't have any details on service history and seemed more up on the dvd and navigation system installed in it then mechanical.
It didn't feel right..so I passed.
