I was changing the oil in the FJ today (30,000 miles) and thought it might be about time for a trans service. I have a 07 2wd. I feel like a complete idiot but was unable to find the trans dipstick in the engine bay? Where would one find that and does anyone here know the service interval and capoacity and specific fluid needed?

I don't know if the auto trans FJ has a trans dipstick or not (I have the MT6). What is funny though is that it just might NOT have one. I say this because our Range Rover doesn't have a dipstick for the trans. Good question.... I am sure someone here can tell you.

Early on in my ownership of my new toy, I had the :hhmm:'pleasure' of getting high centered on some hidden stumps and caved in my tranny oil pan.
I got it home, talked to the dealer, and then did the oil change. Ther is no dipstick. the oil level is set according to temerature. the tranny takes about 5 litres installed with a hose and then start the vehicle and let the tranny get up to 52 degrees C ( I think). There's a whole sequence to the process, but when the vehicle is running and the oil is the right temp, it comes out the drain plug. I used an infrared heat gun to check the temp and not the Toyota shop sequence. Hope that helps.

You aren't set up to change the fluid at home basically. There is no dipstick, and the fill/drain plug is basically the same thing. You need a special adapter to fill it if I remember correctly. It's allegedly a lifetime fluid anyway(Toyota's words).

It's a dealer item, they use a special fluid too, WS trans fluid. There is no dipstick, but check your maintenece schedule, it is a scheduled item only if you drive while towing, 60k is the mile marker.
It says drain and refill, it only does like 3 to 4 quarts, the system probably holds 12 quarts (just a guess), I will be checking with my Toyota dealer to see if they can do a flush at 60k, replacing all of the fluid, otherwise, what does replacing 25% of the fluid really do for the trans?

Other than towing, it is not a maint. item......
