1991 4Runner, V6 3.0L 2WD, Auto

Ocassionally starts out in 2/3 gear (skips 1st) - very sluggish...

During the event the Over Drive light on the dash will flicker on and off...

Fluids look, feel and smell fine. No slipping or overheating either.

Any diagnostic ideas would be appreciated - locals want to "replace" the xm without really digging in to the specifics...

I don't really know for your specific tranny, but it sounds like a speed sensor or shift solenoid problem. Possibly could be an ECU problem but the flickering light screams bad connection or bad ground. BTW, I didn't know that the 91 4runners were offered in 2wd????
Check your connections and grounds and then get a FSM and go through the troubleshooting matrix for the tranny. 50 bucks for the manual and not more than 150 for a shift solenoid beats the hell out of the cost for a new tranny.
good luck,
Dan

Thanks

The Yota dealership replaced the solenoid a few months back and problem still exists.

Where and what FSM would you suggest I get?

Oh yeah, it does have an ECT button on the shifing console for those moments that better traction is needed...

contact cruiserdan for your FSM. ECT is for changing shift points, mostly for towing or driving fast.
good luck,
Dan
