Yes, the FJC transfer case is chain driven, no difference between the manual and automatic transmissions models.

I'm sure there is someone whom has destroyed their FJC transfer case, yet, I've not heard of too many being posted on the internet nor met anyone who suffered a transfer case problem...

Why are you asking about an 80 series case, just curious? The FJC case is stronger than most gear driven yota cases that came in previous models. Only issues I've heard with the OEM TC have been an rare output shaft here and there.

If you want a link to a writeup on TC options for the FJC PM me.

The 80 series have a gear driven transfer case

As Jerry says, they are gear-driven cases.

The only downside to the stock chain-driven FJC/Taco transfer cases is the fact that you can't change the low-range ratio (no one makes any replacement sprocket/chain sets). Other than that, they are very reliable and quieter than geared cases. Oh, and they are a little larger, and hang down a couple of inches more than a geared case.

I have a VF2A (stock auto-tranny FJC) transfer case with low miles on it sitting on my shop floor if anyone needs a spare or a replacement. I'd let it go pretty cheap just to get rid of it.
