Does anyone know how to check the bearing preload on the rear transfer case output bearing? I have changed the bearing and once I tighten the output flange I noticed that the shaft is turning tight. I can feel a lot of resistance when I rotate the shaft, in fact I need a wrench on the output shaft nut to turn the case over. Seems a little snug to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Gerry

There are shims behind the bearing race in the rear bearing retainer that sets the pre-load. Without the seal in place, there should be very slight drag when the transfer case is in neutral and the bearings are lubricated with gear oil or assembly lube. It should not be tight, and it should definitely not be notchy.

If you need a wrench to turn it, it's way too tight.

In a pinch you can double or triple the bearing retainer gasket until you get the right shims to set the pre-load properly. You can also try removing the shim(s) that are there and see how it goes. If it's too tight, you'll trash the bearings in short order.

Download a manual from the sticky's at the top of the 70 series page.
They have the tear down and rebuild info in them for the transfercase....
