Simple question really....

I have an 80, and I have a 1980 3/4T Sankey with surge brakes (currently for sale in the for sale section, but I think I'm going to keep it).

I am about to start building this trailer, and have a question about the weight and the brakes!

I am having the frame and box blasted, and am wondering if I remove the braking system for the blasting etc. if it is too much weight to run with no brakes?

I figure it will just be less maintenance if I leave them off.. I don't plan on doing any real hardcore wheeling with the trailer, just easy stuff, and camping!!

Anyway, let me know your thoughts!

Maybe i should try this approach.....

How heavy is your trailer without any gear like RTT etc. and do you have any type of brakes on the trailer?

Out of curiosity how much does a M416, or M101 weigh?

Thanks again,

My M416 weighs probably around 400# but I cannot give you a solid number. I can tell you that when leaned up against the tailgate of a 1 ton pickup, I can lift the trailer up into the bed by myself, hence the estimate.

As for brakes, if the trailer came with them then I'd keep them. My trailer has a hand brake for keeping it stationary after being unhitched.

Thanks for the reply!!

I imagine eventually I'll go brakeless, aside from the handbrake!! I'm guessing once I burn through these pads that I'll have a tough time replacing them! I'm hoping the handbrake, is a seperate set of pads, but I haven't taken the wheels off yet to look!

Thanks for the help!

Keep the comments coming!

a stock cdn M101 weighs in at 775 lbs. didnt weigh mine...but after the lid and misc metal added...it probably sits at or around 900-925. cdn M101's and M100s, M416's bantams, iltis..dont have brakes aside from the parking brake. a 3/4T would probably weigh considerably more than the 1/4T's.

by building it..what are your plans? if you plan to beef things up...or adding an RTT...might want to think about keeping the brakes. if you plan on swapping axles...you can get some with brakes.

Thanks d0ubledown!

Not sure about RTT.. I want one, but might just suffer through with a regular tent (would like to find one big enough for 2 kids and 2 adults)!!

Plan is to restore the trailer (paint to match my truck!), and add a flat lid. Probably add a water tank, maybe a small kitchen, but probably not! Mostly storage, battery, water pump, fridge, after this not sure.. need to keep looking at others to see what I think I would need, or use!

just saw your FS ad. if it were me...id keep 'er. how old are your kids? ive got a 10 month, 4 and 6 year old. we had an old 70's tent trailer...with 2 double beds. as nice as it was, it took a beating when i took it off road to go camping. didnt mind so much since it was such a beater. plus it was a bit big at over 6' wide and 8' plus box.

now that we ditched the tent trailer, we're going to go with a bigger quality ground tent. wed like to get the springbar, but its way too much $$ so we're going with the kodiak. 10X10'. with a family of 5 and sometimes a couple extra kids...the cruiser gets full fast. going with a trailer to put the larger tent it and all the gear should work out better.

...unless youve got an extra 10 or so G's for one of those fancy off road tent trailers ;)

i just finished most of the work done to my trailer. just added a lid and did a spring over. painted 'er black to match the cruiser. still to add is the propane tank mount. down the road will be a battery box and perhaps a water tank since thers much more room under the tub after the spring over. our kitchen is basically a couple fold up tables. we're looking to get one of those coleman road trip grilles to get more table space.

i find loading a trailer down with pull out sinks, tables etc just adds unnecessary weight. im more of a pack it in a bin type. i rather have the kids away from the trailer at camp as there are lots of sharp metal bits etc that theyd end up whacking with their noggins.

I hear ya!!

My kids are 8 months and 3! we're just getting into camping again, and I am looking to buy a bunch of gear!

The only RTT I can really get my hands on easily is the ARB and my local shops are wanting 2K+ for the tent. Seems like a lot of $$ for a tent. It would be nice to be off the ground, but we'll see who in the family ends up coming camping.

I'm getting the trailer completely blasted, repainted, and undercoated for $1K.

I'm not sure about the brakes.. ideally I'd like none, accept for a hand brake! but, I might be able to track down some pads!! If I find some, I should buy a few sets!!

Unfortunately I don't have the $$ for a fancy off road tent trailer!! although I'd love one!!

Nice Job!! I have a propane tank on the back of my rig!! not sure if I'll put the mount on my trailer!! I also have 2 gas cans on the back (don't rear end me!!). So no real need for that on the trailer either!!

I see your point about keeping the kids away from camp!! no need for MORE injuries at camp!!

Looks like I'm leaning towards your type of set up.. feel free to post some pics!!
