So one of the sensors has gone out in my wife’s 2009 gx. Yes I’ve checked the spare and the 1st/2nd tire set button, however she wants to keep the tpms system working so I can’t ground the wire behind the glove box. So what’s going to be my most cost effective way to get this done. The threads I have read say either Toyota dealer or discount tire has the ability to fix it but these are a few years old. Just wondering if there is a DIY way or if it’s easier to just bring it somewhere.

If it is a bad sensor in one or more of your wheels, and it sounds like it is, you'll likely need to go to a shop. In order to replace the sensor, you have take the tire off the wheel.

You can buy the sensors online, and see if a shop will let you just pay labor to replace and program the sensor. All in all, I paid ~$100 per wheel for the tire shop I trust to drop in and program new sensors.

Related tpms question. I’m about to buy a used set of OEM rims with tires already on them. Will I need to go to a shop to get them reprogrammed even though they are Lexus parts? Thanks.

Can any old tire shop fix it

They would need to have the Toyota software to do it. The Lexus shop who works on my GX recommended a tire shop, and that's where I went. I'd just check with the shop you want to use and make sure they have all the Toyota software for programming the sensors. It took a few tries for the programming to stick. Apparently this is not uncommon.

Not sure. Are they from another GX470, and, if so, do you know if the sensors are good? The dealer or a tire shop can do a quick check to see if the sensors are sending a signal, but I think the diagnostic to check if they're all programmed properly is a bit more involved.

FWIW, I ordered new TPMS sensors from TPMS.com for my new wheels and they came pre-programmed which was a nice bonus. Price was good and shipping was super fast, plus they had black stem ones that I wanted since my new wheels are black.

That's really good to know for future purchases. Did you just pay a shop to do the install?

They are from another GX470, I’m not sure if they are good but the rims and tires are essentially mint so I’m hopeful tpms sensors are good. I really want to avoid dealership

I got Direct Tire to put on wheels. They said they checked and tpms worked before they mounted wheels. But then after wheels installed they told me batteries must have died?
They told me $130 each wheel for new sensors. Wtf? I looked on tpms.com, set of 4 is $100. So I’ll probably buy online and ask local shop to install.

How long should it take before tpms light comes on? It didn’t the whole ride home.

That $130 is a bit steep, but I'm not sure what shop costs (labor + overhead) are in Boston vs Atlanta. My guess is they're somewhat higher. I think for all 5 (sensors + programming + install) I paid right around, maybe slightly less than, $500.

As far as the miles before the light comes on...I made a trip from Atlanta to Athens the day they were installed. It took about 50 or 60 miles before they came back on. Drove back to the shop the next morning, they re-programmed them, drove around town for another 50 or so miles and the light came on again. Third trip back, they pulled one of the sensors and saw the programming just wasn't sticking. After that, no issues.

Just found this thread and thought I would add to it :)

I purchased my TPMS sensors from Ebay for $61 shipped (4 sensors, I forgot about the spare tire). The vendor said the sensors were programmed for Lexus. My tire guy installed, and said he couldn't get the GX to accept them and didn't know why. He said No Charge since he couldn't get the TPMS to work. BTW, my tire guy said he charges $65/tire to install new sensors, which included the TPMS sensor. I told him I got them for $60 total and he couldn't believe it. As to the quality and how long they'll last, that remains to be seen.

I tried to reset the TPMS with the dash button to no avail. I then read that if you disconnect the battery for 2 minutes, the system resets and that should take care of the problem. It did  No more tire light.

Were they these sensors by chance? I've had them in my cart for a few weeks waiting for tires to pull the trigger...

I found out Costco is selling the Dill brand TPMS for our vehicles and they will program it for you. One of mine is out and looking into the Costco deal but will feedback if I pull the trigger. Anyone on here have any experience with Dill TPMS?

You will need to program your car to accept the wheels. I have a second set of gx470 wheels I purchased off CL. Two different shops informed me it would be $100 to program my rig to accept.
I did the bypass and havent worried about it for 2 years.

When I first bight mine I replaced the spare tpms and programed it myself with techstream, but it turned out all 4 wheels didn't have the tpms registered so I just cut the wire and grounded it until I can replace the tires and tpms sensors on 4 remaining wheels, then program it myself.
