I have been racking my brain for a few weeks now looking for a tow rig/ daily. Driver, I was leaning towards the new ford f150, v6 ecoboost motor tows 11,300, very nice interior, Chevy tows 9,000 rides nice but interior is dated, looked at dodge ram yesterday, it tows 10,500, nice interior and that 5.7 L hemi pulls real nice, not really into the styling. Any suggestions, comments, etch. ?????

i would go with chevy or toyota. are u looking at new trucks?

Toyota pick ups are too spendy. I wanted a mid size, a 4 door tacoma and more than likely will go to a Nissan frontier due to pricing.
Plus I have not heard great things about the Tundra.

i have own a tacoma for 8 years and had no problem with it. It was more money than nissan but you get what u paid for, work on more than one frontier, they have more problems than tacomas, blown rear ends at 40k, brake problems, engine problems, etc...
well my tacoma went to the crusher do to rusted frame, so that what i get for living in CT. :frown:

I've had a few issues with the Tundra but it was also after a year after a new design. You can also get the dealer down quite a bit.

Toyotas are tough to get now due to the earthquake making them expensive,

whats gonna happen to fj cruiser. trade in?

does this count? :) It has a Toyota AISIN Tranny in it.

I was in the same spot, had to buy a work truck. Could not justify the extra cost of a Toyota. To get a 4.0 auto puts you in a xcab, and I'd have to move to a smaller plow. Picked up another '11 Silverado regular cab 1500. For the best mpg, you need to get a 5.3 with the afm and the six speed auto. First tank 21 mpg (driven for mileage). Ecoboost looked interesting but a couple months ago the entry price was a non starter.

Cruiser is getting traded in, it will be a sad day, love that truck, just can't use it. I test drove the ford, Chevy and dodge, right now my favorite is the ford, dodge is second and Chevy last. Chevy had the least amount of power, lowest towing and a dated interior. Dodge hemi. Is sweet nice interior not sold on the styling, ford v6 ecoboost tows 11,300 gets 20 mpg but is the most expensive, ill know tomorrow, hopefully

It is sad that you trade a cruiser in. But, like all things, a means to an end..... a stage of life.

My question. When will you tow more than 9,000lbs?

Unless you race cars this isn't really possible.... 9k, is a ton of weight. Thats a race car in a enclosed trailer. I'd say if you were going to tow your cruiser in an enclosed trailer, then you should go for the Ford....

Let me tell you something. If you stay under 60mph, your gas mileage improves. I'm driving a 20,000 vehicle, towing a 6,000lb brick and if I go 65, I've averaged 8.89mpg over 4k miles. but I've learned that dropping 6mph will increase your mileage significantly. I just got 14mpg from Niagra falls to worcester with the same vehicles.

Just saying. Why the rush?

My rush is I can't tow the fj40 with the cruiser, I need a tow rig to go wheelin, I keep missing runs because I am borrowing trucks to get to the trails, sometimes I can't get one. I figure the 40 is about 4500 lbs. trailer is 2000 lbs three people with camping gear, cloths food etc. I'm around 8000 lbs give or take a few.

u got a trailer?

Good stuff, sorry, I was referring to my 65mph to 59mph decrease. Sounds like you have a great reason to get a tow rig!!!

One of the cruiserheads in Seattle just purchased one of the nice new Shiny Toyota trucks... Tundra???? His reasoning was that it would actually even out in comparison to the US made rigs in price. Resell Value of the Toyota trucks is way up there. Have you seen the resell pricing of some of these rigs?

Just a word of warning....none of these rigs will be anywhere near the epa estimates unless you're willing to change driving styles. I was averaging 24 until my wife did 60 miles in the truck. Just saying, expect the high teens unloaded if you drive like most people.

I do have a trailer. suburban?? not sure I can change my aggressive driving style, I have slowed down a bit, figured the v6 in the ford would be better as a daily driver than the 5.7 v8 hemi.
