Hi, might be a silly question to a lot but being from the UK we don't use the types of towbars you guys do, there are a few coming to the market now but are expensive.

Basically I want to make a removable tow hitch and need to know the size of box section used, they are advertised as 2" but is that the internal or external measurement, I have made a couple of simple trailers now and want to make a more expedition style one, so would I use 2" /50mm for the trailer frame and 60mm for the receiver?

Any help advice is appreciated, thanks rich

50x50x5 SHS for the tow lug (eg. the removable part), 65x65x6 SHS for the receiver tube into which the lug is inserted. Ideally you buy SHS which has been drawn over a mandrel to remove the weld bead. 20x75 FMS for the tongue through which the ball will be mounted.

The pin which retains the lug into the receiver is 5/8".

Whatever you design, remember to try to keep your bending moments small, your rear coupling overhang short and ensure a well thought-out load path through the major structure of the tow vehicle.

Hope this helps.

Have made my detachable towbar this week, using the size of box suggested I fabricated it work and got it powder coated, bolted on and tried out my little trailer on it, overall quite pleased.

Will take some more pictures tomorrow as it's 'LRO spring adventure' show this weekend, so will hopefully be Getting it muddy!

Any comments welcome.

Rich.
