Tried a search and came up with some answers, just not the one I need.

In replacing the cat on my 60, I'm running into a problem with the thermo sensor. It doesn't appear I'm gonna get it out of the original cat without rending it inoperable, and as far I can tell it's been discontinued.

It there a way around this? I.e., Has anyone successfully plugged the hole at the end of the sleeve somehow? Has anyone fabbed a probe that works with the existing wires?
Am I making too big of deal out of this? Can I/should I just run the aftermarket cat with no thermo sensor probe in place ?

Thanks, any help greatly appreciated.

I am going though the same problem. You can buy a aftermarket cat with the hole but I think my sensor is toast. I have not tried to pull mine yet. I think you want to run the sensor if you care about smog. If I remember it right, running without it might cause your cat to run hotter and maybe not last as long. Hopefully I will have time to work on my cruiser soon and will let you know what I do.

CMD82,

Won't be satisfied with this solution until it arrives, but I called SOR for some tech advice on a potential bypass and they said they could send me a good used one for $75. Pulled the trigger on the spot to hopefully end this saga by the weekend. (BTW - OEM new if available would've run over $200, so even though spendy it seemed to make sense.)

Still don't know about the possibility of bypassing, because I don't know if exhaust gas actually circulates in the tube that houses the probe. For me the easiest out was to pay SOR to send me good quality replacement and put the whole thing behind me.

When pulling the cat, pull it with the sensor intact. I.e., remove the center console, unplug the sensor, and remove it with the grommet through the hole in the floor. (BTW - there's also a clip that shares a bolt with the parking brake cable on the underside that may need a fair amount of soaking prior to removal  ).

Then remove the cat and stand it on end with the sensor end facing upward. This way you'll greatly improve your chances of saving it because you'll be working from your feet instead of your back.
