Anyone have one of these tools like the snap on ya9730?

I am doing this job on sunday and would like to make a tool ahead of time to make the job a little quicker. I need the dimensions it has to be compressed and extended please.

I know I could buy one but I don't have time to order one from snap on, I haven't been impressed with snap on lately and finally, I'm cheap!

:beer::beer:

FYI, next time I won't be a cheap bastard and buy the f'n tool, the swear jar is overflowing after taking that a/c compressor and mount off...

Apparently you are doing a 3.4L timing belt change.
I have done 2 on the 3.4L without this tool - the only difference is that you have to losen the AC behind the PS front tire (if you have AC) to access and then unbolt the tensioner. (this adds about an extra 1-2 hrs and busted knuckles)
FWIW I replaced my tensioner while I was in there.
To compress the tensioner prior to (re)installing it, I just used a vice. After it is compressed I inserted a small allen wrench into the hole in the tensioner that holds it compressed while you install it.
Install the water pump, tensioner, belt, etc. THEN pull the pin (allen wrench in my case) on the tensioner.

It is easiest to remove the passenger front tire to access the AC. Be sure to have swivels and ratcheting box end wrenches, they make things SOOO much easier! :D

After writing all this i noticed that it looks like you have completed this job!
Maybe it will help someone else?

If it helps someone else, my advice is just buy the f'n tool! I did the pull the tensioner, put it in the vise and all that bs... Worst part of the job was to access that back tensioner bolt.

I agree, and before I clock another 45K miles I'll be purchasing that tool!
Also, I think we should have a "loan a tool" section for special things like this.
When I get mine I'll post it up and ask for a Paypal deposit, then when the tool is returned, so is the deposit.

Oh ya, the a/c pump went on in less than half the time it took to take off... Like you say about the wheel well, it was much easier once I found all the bolts and figured it out.

Glad to hear you got it done.
My first timing belt, water pump, tensioner, etc took me about 10 hrs in 30F garage. (removing the AC)
Including fabing up a crankshaft pulley tool.
The 2nd one I did for my cousin only took about 6 hrs. (removing the AC)
I'm doing another friends this spring (after I get that tool!) I think we can have it done in about 4-5 hrs not fooling with those AC bolts.

I was about 8 hours including cleaning the covers and all the red crust. I'm pretty sure I could knock at least an hour off while still removing the a/c pump and ya, 5 hours with the tool. Thats what I have heard toyota techs do the job in. I made the crank tool the day before.

The Toyota tech that did mine, does the job on his lunch break sometimes. ( 1 hour )

I didn't need to hear that... I thought I was cool thinking I could maybe do it in 5 hours next time. Thanks for wreckin that fantacy for me...

1 hr? Does that include the water pump, new belt & tensioner & fluids?

I'm from Missouri so he'd have to "show me" it can be done in an hour. :hillbilly:

WOW! Is he mortal?
