The 3.4 in my T100 is the first vehicle that I have had that has a timing belt.

It currently has 156k miles and I bought it at 141k.

The dealer was unable to tell me if the belt had been done, and there is no sticker in the engine compartment or elsewhere saying that somebody did it.

I inspected the belt and it looks good, but I don't want a catastrophic engine failure to prove me wrong.

My questions:

Is there a way to determine if the belt is good?

Is it likely that if it were the original belt, that it would have come apart by now?

If it comes apart, is the 3.4 built so that the valves can contact the piston?

Thanks,
Dan

The 3.4 is non interference so no concern about the valves.

The main visual clue is whether the belt shows signs of cracking. Something that might give you a clue is to see if it looks like the water pump has been changed out. The belt and the pump are usually done at the same time and the pump often goes first.
