I bought tie rod ends, 555s, and tubes from Bud's to tighten up the steering on the old bruiser cruiser hoping to avoid "old part" grumpy syndrome, but alas, I have been thwarted by one end of the tubes being filled with paint and gunk and whatever... and I can't get my tie rod end started. Since I have all the other three done, and the male and female ends appear to be synchronized I was hoping to solicit from the the numerous geniuses here a fool proof way to get the threads cleaned up so I can get my tie rod end installed. My attempts so far have been futile. Is there a handy tool that can be procured for this purpose.

Is it powder coat thats in the threads? Try using a utility knife and pick to chip away at it then use just the pick to follow the threads? I used a toothbrush and wd to clean out the gunk.

have them acid washed and then re-paint the outside of the rod, spray the inside with lanotec or equivalent antirust agent.

Dip end for an hour in muratic acid, wash with water, oil., put end on. MIke

Just use a pick to get the stuff out.
Forget all this dipping it in stuff, waste of time
