Would it be OK to clean the throttle body with air intake cleanner ( without removing it )? I mean just spray it really good from the openning. :D

Cause all of a sudden I'm getting poor millage, like 11mpg. Just did the spark plugs, cap, rotor, air cleaner, all fluids, BG44k, perfect timming 6 mos ago. Haven't done fuel filter, will do this weekend. Got 285 on it. Any more I need to look at?

Thanks :)

The deposits and buildup are on the other side of the butterfly. Don't think you'll get it very clean from the air intake side. Removing the throttle body is not a big deal. Get an FSM. It's about a 1 banana, hour to hour and a half job.

Probably coincides with the winter gas formulation. It usually drops my rig's mileage by 1-2MPG.

If your goal is simply to remove the build up on the butteryfly then it's entirely possible to get both sides clean without removing the TB. Use TB cleaner - not carb cleaner. The 3M stuff works well. Remove the intake hose, zip tie an old wash cloth around something long and straight, soak the cloth with the 3M, hold the butterfly open by placing weight on the gas pedal, and start scrubbing away on it, repeat until clean. Also not a bad idea to jack up the driver's side of your 80 a few inches so that any excess goo will drip back out, have something there to catch it. Clean as a whistle. Of course some may say, after going to all that trouble why not just remove the TB?

Might have been a good idea to do the TB cleaning when you had the new wires, plugs, cap/rotor put in.....couldn't believe how much gunk i had in the TB..bought the Valvoline synthetic cleaner and sprayed/soaked the TB as well as the tshirt cut and wrapped onto a long piece of bamboo...after many passes, it got most of the gunk out....sure made a diff w/start up idle and getting on the throttle while driving...used to be mash the gas and nothing.. now, goes to 3k rpm and more and takes off..

Are you talking about removing and cleaning the TB or cleaning it without removing it?

Cleaning the TB w/out removing it....

Do you remember what the before/after cleaning cold start up RPM's were?

MoJ,

Before startup idle was 2000-2200... after TB cleaning, plugs, wires, cap/rotor, 1800, after Seafoam / Red Line Total Fuel System Cleaner 1400-1600, after 3-4 mins goes down to 600-700

I looked at cleaning mine this weekend but, I couldn't get all the hoses off. I was worried that I might mess one of them up. How do you get them to slide off withou tearing them up?

Usually if you grab them good with a set of pliers where the hose is attached to the nozzle, and rotate back and forth, they will break loose.
