I have a pretty stock solid-top '79 BJ40. I recently was offered a non-Toyota brand PTO winch. That's about as much as I know. I'm going to look at it on wednesday but I thought maybe could get some advice in preparation.

Since the truck is pretty stock (3500lbs?) I'm guessing I would need a 6000lb+ rated winch? Any thoughts on which brands are good/bad and about how much to pay for a rebuilt PTO winch?

Not knowing what you'll be looking at makes it a little hard, but a couple of broad generalizations.

I doubt that you find a PTO winch rated less than 6000 lbs. Typical is 8,000, which gives you 2 to 2 and a half times the vehicle weight in pulling power. Should do the job for your truck.

Generally, PTO winches are much more up to hard, repeated pulls. For vehicle applications, that means typical use means it's probably barely broken in. But if it's a logger's old winch, well could be near worn out.

The trick for your install is going to be installing the PTO on the transfer case and getting the shaft in place. Holes are already in the frame for the way Toyota does it. If it were me, I'd make everything Toyota up until the final mating to the winch itself, presuming it's something different than Toyota does.

Parts to do that could be found used, might be pretty costly new.

Good luck. I'd like to get back to Central America and do some 'wheeling some time.

I like PTO winches better than electric, because it's one less separate unit to worry over. You have power as long as you have a motor.

Tks for the feedback... as soon as I know more I'll post an update here.

Its a Koenig King Winch.... looks to be about as old as the cruiser :) Trying to find technical info.. thoughts?

Koenig has a good rep far as I know. Never seen one, but remember the ads in old Popular Mechanics, I think.

Does the input to the winch look like it'll line up with the frame holes on your 40? If they do, that makes it easy. If not, well you can see how big a project that might be better than those of us not on the scene.

Should be easy to fab whatever brackets needed on the front porch of a 40:)
