Folks,
Debating whether to keep my existing set up or sell both the hard and soft caps and invest in a Can-Back set up.

Motivations for going the Can-Back route include the ability to run cargo on the roof vs. not being able to run anything on the Bestop I currently have, and the ability to have "instant air conditioning" by rolling up the side windows.

From anyone's experience, have you been able to run "heavier" loads on your Can-Back? By that I mean bicycles, kayaks, camping gear (up to an including a roof top tent) successfully? I'd like to be able to carry the same amount of gear on a Can-Back that I can currently pack on my hard cap, which amounts to at least 150lb at any given time.

I've also recently noticed that Can-Back has been purchased by another company, and was wondering if this has negatively impacted their quality and/or customer service. Should I hold out for used or is buying new a safe option?

Thoughts appreciated.

I've run a RTT on mine. Great product, highly recommend Can-Backs. My truck got totaled, but my Can-back is waiting for me under my bed until the next time I get a truck :).

Or....you could just give me a good deal on yours (just in case you might want to get....say.....a 4Runner)! :)

Where did you get that bitchin rear bumper? I too have been thinking about a Can-Back and looking for a rack that can handle the tent and two adults.

Does this mean we're ready to play "let's make a deal"?? Want that Can-Back!

Which of us do you mean? Think CY and I both have bumpers?

Your bumper on that 4Runner, very nice! I have a Taco similar CY's sweet rig, a snorkle is just about all that is left to do...besides that Can-Back and RTT. CY, where did you get the rack for the RTT? Sorry about your truck.

Thanks for the compliments. The 4runner rear bumper I made myself, and a fellow forum member (I forget which forum now..) made the brackets for the can-back rack. I then just used some 1 or 1.5" square tubing to make the cross bars.

Canback wants something crazy like 150-300 for the rack mounts, so I paid him instead.

There's a few more random pics of the can-back after I first got it in this album.

Impressive work I must say, better looking than ARB! Thanks for the pics, I'll post some up myself when I get the Can-Back and RTT, hopefully before summer.

Definitely looks good. Going to continue to look around for one. Got the bug bad. Think I'm going to go with black though. Great pics - thanks for sharing.

Yea I would have liked black too, but as you noticed, they are not easy to come by! I think the tan will still look pretty good once I get a white ext. cab sometime in the future. The last one I saw for sale was on TTORA and it was posted for a surprisingly long time and went for a VERY reasonable price. Somewhere in the $400's I think. If I didn't already have one I would have snatched that up.

There are a couple options to look for. I believe the chromed out looking crossbars are stainless steel or something and cost more than the standard black ones. The also have a higher load rating.

Great pics! Were you able to salvage the snorkel off your Taco as well?

Noo, I only had a couple hours to salvage things off the truck before I had to leave town. Accident occurred north of the Grand Canyon. If I had a little more time I could have pulled it and bent it back out; it got tweaked a little in one of the rolls.

Bummer.

CYi5,

I'm working a deal on a 2nd hand Can-Back. Looks like I may be getting one sooner than I expected! I'll keep you posted - but it is the black one I was originally going for.

Price is just about right. If I unload my fiberglass cap + Bestop Supertop I stand to actually make a few dollars off the deal - well, kinda.
