Where is the EGT installed? I've got mine on the exhaust header BEFORE the turbo. My readings are as high as 1200-1250 F when pulling hard up steep hills here in Guatemala at over 5000 ft. Level cruising on the interstate in Canada/USA I get around 800 F. If your pyrometer is after the turbo you can expect exhaust temps that are 100 - 150 lower. The further removed you are from the combustion process the cooler readings you will get, especially if you are a ways down the exhaust and it's cold out..

i have an egt installed 6" post turbo on a 86 13bt. I haven't been able to get over 900degF yet. I'm at 2600' elevation. the hottest was when pulling a long hill in 5th gear and stepping on it. still didn't get any hotter than 900F post turbo...
