Anyone have experience putting a third battery into a HJ 80. I have a 24v starter system so 2 batteries are required, but I want to put in an aux battery so that my fridge doesn't kill the batteries I need to start the car. Location is the biggest question...where to put the third battery. Inside the cab isn't an option for safety reasons. so, any advice?

Thanks!
J

Where are your 2 cranking batteries now? LH or RH drive?

Where ever they are ,you will have to shift something.
If its a RHD maybe install it on the left in front of the firewall

Choose a gel battery for the aux as they are smaller than the equivalent lead battery

There is plenty of room in the engine bay.

It's RHD, and the two cranking batteries are front left and right as in the picture by Haffi. I'll have to look at the left side firewall. My recollection though, is that there are quite a few things there in the way. I was sort of thinking of in the back where the spare tire goes, since mine is on a swing out carrier.

Most aussies have it like Haffi ,but on the other side obviously.
Try 80scool,there will be dozens of owners who have solved this problem on RH 80 series;)

A little OT, but have you binned your air con and fitted a York pump for o/b air? If its a yes do you have pictures of how you mounted it?

BTW, I have my 3rd battery mounted in the rear, but need to move it.

Yes, that is a York, my truck is a non AC model, but I got a AC bracket with a pulley. Then there is a metal plate between the york and the bracket.

I dont have a pic of it, but I can shoot one or two tomorrow. It is to dark right now.

Yes if you could please. I have 2 york pumps here, just got to decide if I need it more than the AC.

Paul

Hi, here is a close up pic of the York.

The plate between the york and the AC bracket is bolted to the York from the one and the bracket on the other.

I did not make the plate myself, I bought the bracket and the York from a wrecked truck, but it is simple to make. Just get metal plate in the right size and drill 8 holes. Then bolt the plate to the bracket on the engine and then the York to the rest. The lower bolts on the York are a bit thight to get to if I remember correctly.

for that, just got to decide if I want to get rid of the air con now?

Buy looking at the pictures, do you have an intercooler fitted? If so where did you get it?

Paul

Yes I have a front mounted intercooler. The cooler is made by a radiator shop here in Iceland but the pipes are made by me. I would be surprised if the have them on stock any more.
The cooler was there when I bougt the truck, but I had to change the piping to fit the york. Here is a pic of the cooler.

I have some pics of the piping, I can post them if U are interested.

yes please, I have a very big intercooler here that I might fit. But I could never work out what way to run the pipes.

Paul

Ok here come the pics.

1. Drivers side. Pipe runs under battery tray, and up next to fan cover. I don´t have a pic with battery tray removed.

2. Passenger side. Silicone hose missing.

3. Same pipe as in pic 2. Battery tray and air cleaner missing.

5. Pipe from turbine to intercooler. Be careful not to drop any metal things into the hose from the air cleaner. I found out the hard way :bang: From now I will never forget closing that hose with a plastic bag and some tape.

6. Pipe from intercooler to intake manifold. Connects to pipe in pic. 1. All pipes and silicone hoses are 50 mm.
