I am toying with the idea of selling Patches- my 4/84 HJ47 Troopy. There are loads of snaps of her in my user space, and I'm happy to send more snaps if anyone is truly interested. I have just gotten a pretty good job here in Australia with a law firm which specialises in what I enjoy, so I will likely be here for at least a few more years. I worry that if I leave Patches sit for that long, even though she is in New Mexico, in a garage, up on blocks, with a trickle charger; she will start to deteriorate. She needs to be loved and driven. I am the second owner, and bought her in Australia in 1996.

A quick rundown on her: 2000 Vortec 350 which I bought brand new. I have always run Castrol Syntec in it, and I change the oil every 3000 miles. It has also had a Pre-Luber installed since new, so she has never had a dry start. The engine has a little less-than 30,000 miles now. The 2.5" exhaust with performance cat was installed by Stu at All Custom X in Santa Fe, and it is a work of art. When I lived in Phoenix, I had her smog checked, and she passed.

The fuel system is all Chevy, with a factory fuel pump installed in the long range tank. This means that fuel pressure is right where is should be, and the the fuel filter can be bought at Pep Boys.

The gear box is a brand new H55F with about 8,000 miles on it now. The transfer case is from an 87 FJ60, and was re-built at the same time I installed the new gear box. The gearing is 3:73 front and rear, so the highway RPM is very low. Both the axles were re-built using Amsoil synthetic bearing grease and all of the boxes have Amsoil synthetic gear oil in them. I also changed the gear box and transfer case oil after the first 1,000 miles. The brakes are nearly new all the way around. All tie rod ends have less-than 30,000 miles. The clutch master is nearly new, and the brake master is only a few years old.

The suspension is 2.5" OME. This is the Aussie made OME, not the Malaysian stuff you get now. The tyres are BFG A/T 33 X 10.50 X 15 with just under 15,000 miles on all five.

She has a long range tank and a factory tank, and holds about 45 gallons of fuel. She has power steering from an HJ60 and Air con. The motor for the intermittent wipers is brand new Toyota, as is the wiper switch. All of the door rubber, window felt, hood and door latches and handles were replaced with new Toyota items. The rear sliders have brand new Toyota felt in them- and this stuff has been discontinued, I am told. When I put the new felt in the rear sliders, I also had the frames sandblasted and powder coated the factory colour. Also, all of the lights (front turn signal and rear lights) are brand new Toyota.

The seats are out of a 1995 SR5 4Runner, and have no tears, rips or wear. There is a Tuffy centre console, and she has a Pioneer CD player and a CB in the overhead console. The factory am/fm radio still resides in the dash.

Before I painted her, I installed brand new Toyota grille and left fender, and put a hood from a 1977 FJ40 which was totally rust free on her-that's why she has the windshield hold-down hooks (which are brand new Toyota items).

The roof rack was custom made to fit her raised roof, and is a joy to behold. All the lights work, and she has very few squeaks and rattles.

What she needs: Patches is not a show truck; I built her to use. As anyone who has seen her can tell you, she is in really great shape- but not perfect. There is virtually no rust, but there are minor dents. I never got around to fabricating a fan shroud for the Vortec, although this has never been a problem. The air con works great, but it has to be turned on with a rocker switch, as the factory under-dash switch stopped working. There is no head liner- but all she needs is a good interior guy to put one in. The windshield is cracked on the passenger side, about 4" down from the top, but the rubber is almost new. The paint is in good shape, but it 10 years old. The tyre rack needs to be taken apart and re-greased, as it has gotten difficult to open the left side.

All of the windows are tinted: 20% in the rear, 35% in the front. The tint is all in great shape, except for the vent windows on both sides where I stupidly lowered the overhead console down and scratched the tint. Both door panels are clean and ri/tear/hole free. The window regulator on the driver's side is almost new.

I would not hesitate to drive patches to Tiera Del Fuego tomorrow- I am completely serious. This is what I built her for...I just never got round to it. I have driven her to Guatemala and back, and I still have the import sticker on the windshield to prove it. I have also driven her all around the Western US and up into Canada (Alberta) a few miles...just to say that I did it.

IF I sell Patches, I really want her to go to a good home with a Mud member. I am only thinking of selling her because I feel like I am ruining her by letting her sit. If I sell her, I will use the money to build another troopy and bring it back with me- so your money will not be wasted:D.

PM me if you have any questions. I have no intention of giving her away, and I will not sell her for less-than us$25,000 NOT including the 8274-50 Warn Winch. I know this is a bad market right now, but if she stays sitting in my garage then so be it. She is worth every cent- and cost me significantly more. Anyway, I just wanted to put it out there for anyone thinking of getting into the wonderful world of HJ47s:steer:

Cheers,

Josh

let me be the first to say, KEEP IT! if it is not a matter of money, then store the rig and come back to it later.

Hi Josh,
would ship her back too Australia and use it,
(would be cheaper than build a new one I think)
want see some nice pics with Patches on the beaches of
Kangaroo Island, on graveled roads too Oodnadatta, Alice Springs,
Cooper Pedy and on the Canning Stock Route ;)
Cheers

80nick,

I have been storing her for four years now. She seems to be fine whenever I am home and drive her, but I am worried that another 2-3 years will lead to dried out seals, etc. I do have the oil circulated with the Pre-Luber every few months by a friend, but it is not the same as her being driven and loved.

Also, I rent my house without the garage (because that is where Patches is). For the first time, I am having trouble renting the house. I can't help but think that it would be easier to rent the house with a garage.

Like I say: I am really just checking the water. I doubt she will sell in this market. By the time the market improves, I will be home. Then I'm sure I will be very happy I kept her.

Peter,

I have thought about bringing her back here, but it would be too complicated. Australia is a Big Brother country, and getting her to pass all of the inspections, etc. would be very expensive. Add to that the cost of petrol and registration down here and the incredibly slow speed limits with cameras everywhere to make sure the citizens do not speed; I would not even use 5th gear.

I could build another while I am down here using an HJ78 chassis, and then put 3:73 gears in when I get her home. The problem is that I am really attached to Patches...so it may be a good thing to sell her and get another which I am not so attached to.

Cheers,

Josh

More than Germany,
can`t believe !!!!
For example, if I would buy Patches with all these changes you did, I would have to pay more than 1200 € each year only for car tax * and could not drive it anywhere,
not in the city of Berlin, Frankfurt, München, Stuttgart, Köln, Nürnberg and a lot more.
These cities have districts you need "clean cars" to drive in (map orange shows the main district of Berlin where only "clean cars" allowed)
berlin_umwelt.gif

With classic cars older than 30 years it`s allowed to drive in, but these cars must have a historic registration,
means: car must be original and in good shape.
Patches would not get this historic registration in Germany !!

Gas prices Germany vis Australia ;)
Gas price liter at the moment 1,38 EURO
Australia gas price today 20.06. 1,085 Aus $ = 0,63 €

Cheers
Peter
PS.... hope Patches find a good new home

* forgotten: car tax historic cars 194 € year

Josh I think you should keep Patches. You have a truely unique vehicle. Is there any chance you could have your neigbor that oils her driver her? If I weren't 3000 miles away I would offer to take her once in a while.

I keep offering to keep her in rego and insurance and drive her, but he resists. :)

Patches is an absolute pleasure to drive. I have a carby 350 in my troopy, and I dream of a vortec and gears like Patches. She is smooth, quiet and tight, as any good girl should be ;) Motor runs cool, exhaust sounds great (and hushed), a/c blows cold, 60 series steering is sweet compared to my 45 series p/s. Seats are nice and comfy. Body looks good-he was meticulous with all rust removal, even if it isn't show quality. And has used only the best (OEM) parts available.

I have to say if I were in Josh's boots right now, I'd look to sell her, too. I'll be happy to show her to interested parties or help any other way I can.

Hi
Looks like an amazing rig, nice work. I am not interested in buying as I also live in Aus and I couldn't afford it anyway however I would love to see some more pics of what you have done. I have just started work on a HJ47 troopy of my own and am looking for ideas. Also getting a road worthy certificate here is actually not that hard, I got a HJ47 I owned previously past a RWC with very little expense and it was in far worse condition that yours, so I dont think you would have any trouble. No emissions tests or anyhting like that and if you live in SA you dont even need to get a RWC. Also plenty of places to take it away from the speed cameras. Dont sell it you will regret it.

Cheers

I have to agree.

let me be the first to say, KEEP IT! if it is not a matter of money, then store the rig and come back to it later.

You could park it at my place and I could drive it around for you once in awhile.

High Desert Climate / Dry Heat and it will fit in with my fleet so it won't be lonely.

Sell it! Regret is a delicious dessert that never runs out!!!

options...

Opt 1: I'm with Dan, but I must say So Cal/Pasadena weather might be better for her .
Opt 2: Dan & I can switch, and off-road (uh, I mean babysit) her every few months.
Opt 3: How about a rent-to-own scenario?

The :princess: won't mind a new household member for a few years. It'll give me enough time to recover from my own withdrawals of my daughter claiming the FJ62 as her own.

Good Luck!
JZ
