So from out of nowhere i get in my truck, 92 FJ-80, after work and the thing just keeps on turning over and won't fire, the truck was running fine up until now, so to me it sounds like it's not getting enough spark, so i check the coil, good spark there, check at the dizzy, spark there, the only other thing i know to check with my limited mechanical skills is to see if the truck is getting fuel, well with this new fangled fuel injection, i have no idea how to do that, so do you guys have any ideas on things to check before i take it to my trusted mechanic, oh yeah it's not the EFI relay, the check engine light comes on when i have the key turned on so that's eliminated, if anyone has been looking for a built 80 now might be the time to make me offers, this shi@t pisses me off, Brad.

That ain't no Pig. This is a Pig, and I don't just mean the driver.

No idea.

Since you say there is spark, then perhaps the fuel shutoff? I am not sure where it is, but I am relatively sure there is one (Cdan?). Check ALL your fuses, under the dash and under the hood.

Brad,

Likely culprit is the EFI fuse in the box under the bonnet behind the battery.

after the lunch feast i just had i will have plenty, thanks. And you? :flipoff2:

TJK - I didn't say " IRON PIG ", i think any cruiser weighing over #6000 qualifies as a PIG, Brad.

By the way, The Wizard of Oz is on TBS tonight, in case you want to hear more of the same. ;)

when I was diagnosing the same problem on my IFZ (would not start) I first removed the gas cap to relieve head pressure in the tank (so you do not make as much of a mess) , then pulled the fuel pressure regulator return line off at the regulator, cranked the engine and fuel should have come out of the regulator but it did not, then completely removed the regulator from the fuel rail still no fuel came out when cranked,

If your 3FE has a similar easy to get to fuel pressure regulator (it’s right on top on the 1FZ) you could do the same to check for fuel pump operation, if you do have fuel pressure it still may not be getting past the injectors if the EFI system has troubles but that is a start,

Seams I have read about more fuel pump problems on the 1FZ and more EFI problems on the 3FE, could be just perception

TJK - I get more than my share of the Wizard, with a 5 year old daughter that wants to grow up and be Judy Garland i've got it memorized, i'm going up to my local stealership this morning to get a new EFI relay just to try it, maybe i'll get lucky.

RavenTai - Thanks for the info, i'm going to be doing some reading in the FSM by the fire place today, it's finally snowing in Colorado!!!

Well you could take a 17mm wrench and loosen the bango bolt on the fuel filter. Then you try to crank the engine if no fuel leave the ing switch on, find the diagnostic connector, jump Fp to B+ and see if fuel come out. If not the fuel pump is shot. If fuel pressure then either a fuseable link, fuse or broken wire. next is to get to the fuel pump area and see if voltage is getting back to the pump, if so it is the fuel pump. if not then wireing or fuzes.
I sounds like you have spark, but no fuel. Both are controled by the computer, so it sounds like maybe the fuel pump, how many miles on the fuel pump, and truck? later robbie

Hi Brad,

Sorry to hear of your troubles. To get combustion, you have three basic variables: fuel, air and spark. (there are others but these are the basic ones) It sounds like you have verified spark. One of the posts above suggests pulling a hose off of the fuel pressure regulator and cranking it. This is a good test and if you get fuel out of the hose, you should be getting fuel to the injector and into the cylinder. If you don't want to pull the fuel hose, just stick your head in the engine bay and take a big whiff of air after trying to crank it for about thirty seconds. If you smell gas, you're probably getting fuel. That leaves air so check your air filter and intake hoses to make sure you don't have anything clogged up there. I've known folks out west during cold months who pull the air cleaner and find a mouse had made a nest in the air filter for the warmth of the engine!!

Anyway, that should get you started. I would do the quickie fuel test of smelling under the hood before buying an EFI relay. You may save a few bucks that way.

Best Wishes,

Powell

Well I threw in a new EFI relay just for s***s and grins to no avail, when cranking over the motor with the door and hood open there is a definite gas smell, thats another reason i first checked for spark.

Robbie - It's Ben's old truck so it has the MSD high flow pump, not sure how old it is, but i guess my next guess is that the injectors may not be opening, because like i said when cranking the motor over there is a definite gas smell, i wish i lived closer to Golden, Thanks Brad.

do you have fuel pressure? when my pump quit it had the smell of fuel also, it was just residual

Robbie posted up the procedure for your truck

Well I finally just towed the truck up to my mechanic's, after an hour he had it figured out, one of the pick-up coils in the distributor were bad, so i luckily found a used dizzy locally and she's all good, HAPPY THANKSGIVING, Brad.
