The next "how do I use" thread....A "tach dwell"

Hi everyone,
So if you read my other thread about the "new" timing light, the same frined also gave me a new "tach dwell" unit. I also have no clue what it does or how to use the thing. It has two wire leads on it with clips, a red and a black lead. It then has a switch that moves from: tach, dwell, and finally points. It also has a meter. I have attached a picture of the thing so that you can see what I am talking about. What does this thing do for me? How do I use it? I assume that it is only for older cars, but that's ok since I have the 79 4x4 with the 20R and my 72 Karmann Ghia. Any tips, pointers, or tricks for using this thing?

It's only used with vehicles with points. From what I've read, anything after 1970 isn't likely to have points....

Not sure on the different settings, but this may help with the basic function of it.

That meter does look to be pretty old and not sure how reliable it will be. But its better than nothing

you should be able to use it for RPM on your FJ60, assuming it's got a scale for 6 cylinder. the red gets connected to the "distributor side of the coil"--which is one of the primary coil connections. And the black wire goes to ground. You can then use the tach for setting your carb idle speed and mixture, and performing some of the emission components tests.

Where spark plug gap measures how far the plugs are open the dwell measures how long the points are closed. So a larger gap equates to a smaller (shorter) dwell. It's a more accurate way to set the gap on your points. The tune up specifications should provide both a gap and a dwell. The wires are connected the same as the tach, put the switch on dwell, and go to town...

I think it was more like the early 80's that you stop seeing points.
