This is awesome pandathrust! I've been going back and forth with the wife about how we are going to address the rapidly fading paint on the Cruiser. She wants a Maaco single stage and I want to Monstaline the whole thing. Your Cruiser is the best of both worlds. She can have the shiny upper half and I will have the protected lower half. It just so happens that Monstaliner make a blue that is a perfect match for the Nightshadow Pearl.

Thats gonna look good. I'm not sure if i've ever seen a nightshadow pearl with the same body line as I did. Go for it, as long as the wife is happy with it.

Awesome! Just finished reading every post. Going to do it to Clifford soon. Color change from red (post 22 years of AZ sun) to white. Recently moved to northern Idaho and the surface rust is growing like moss!
Questions,,,
What kind of prep is needed with the surface rust? (Paper thin on most spots. Not serious rust. ). Scrape it down to bare metal? Just rough it up with sanding? Will the ML encapsulate and kill the rust, or will it just "incubate" it? I have spent my whole life in almost zero humidity so this is new to me.
What is the best way to make it as rough as possible? I'm going to be climbing all over this thing like a monkey loading gear and taking pictures and want as good a grip as I can get. Add sand? Roll over again while tacky? Mix in broken glass?
I'm forced to do this outside as the laws of physics prevent my rig from fitting into the garage. Outside temp will likely be in the fifties. Is this advisable? I'll post before, process, and after pics; as long as I don't do too embarrassing a job.

I love the new Subaru XV Desert Khaki color. Anyone know if any of these come close to that?

I just got some samples chips from them. The Desert Sand is actually pretty dark vs. "yank my doodle" which looks closer to the pic above. I think I'm going to do the whole truck in it and leave the area that I already did in black monstaliner as is(deflare area and rockers).

I was also surprised to see how dark the desert sand was when I got my samples. I think I'm going to wait till the spring to do this to my truck. Going to do the flares in black and the rest of the truck in Yank My Doodle.

no, not even close. you have to see the XV desert khaki in person. i think it's the non-clear coat look or the matte look it has that i appreciate.

Got a Subaru dealer across the street from work. I'll have to check it out.

How many people have done a partial lining job and wish now they'd just done the whole truck? How many people did the whole truck and wish now they'd just done part of it? Why?

Thanks to a suicidal deer, that pretty much crushed my driver's side rear door (in my own sub'd, less than 100 yards from my house, the night before the morning I'm leaving for a 3-night camping/riding trip), I've got a "vehicle damage payment" check on the way from my insurance company. One of the things I want to do with the proceeds is apply Monstaliner to my truck.

But, here's the problem - where to stop? I'd initially planned to do like several other people and go from the bottom up to the little flare line that starts at the front bumper and then runs up to a few inches below the windows. However, the used door I'm getting doesn't match, and I'm afraid that the slight color variation will play havoc with my OCD.

So, I thought about lining it all the way up to the bottom of the window on the doors. But if I do that, then I'd want to go ahead and do the front quarter panels all the way to the hood gap. But if I do that, then I don't think the unlined hood will look good (plus the hood gets its share of abuse from low-hanging limbs on the trail and would benefit from being lined).
And, what about the rear quarter panels; where's a good stopping point for lining them?

So, is it in for a penny, in for a pound?! Should I just do the whole truck? I've got the OEM roof rack and wasn't planning on removing it anytime soon. Should I line around it? Remove it, line underneath, and then reinstall? What say you?

I know a lot if not most people on Mud are fans of Monstaliner. I hate to be that guy but it seems I am that guy.

I wanted to like this product, I really did. See my posts in this thread a ways back asking about how it works.

Mine got done in late June of 2014. I didn't have time to do it and also needed a re-clear plus had some painting done so I had a buddy do it who is a pro. He restores cars for a living and has been doing that his whole life. He sanded it all back, he followed the instructions and he sprayed it on at my request. Within 2-weeks I had several large chips in the liner. Now 6 months later I have upwards of 10 large chips. Just the other day I had my hood up, hood struts are shot so I had a 2x4 in there holding hood up. It falls out and hood slams down on the board. About 5 nice sized chips in the liner on my hood now.

Sorry folks but Monstaliner is weak and sucks. I can not attribute my chips to application. The dude who sprayed it one restores $50-100k muscle cars. I am positive he did it better than 99.9% of people in this thread. From what I have seen, it is just like and no better than Dupli-color or whatever that cheapo roll on bedliner you get at the auto parts store. In fact I put that stuff on a work truck over 10yrs ago and it chipped just like Monstaliner had the same finish, ect ect.

Eventually, I am going to have to have it all sanded back and get a real liner applied like Line-X. Had Line-X on a truck before and it was awesome, never chipped, tough as all hell. I don't care about color since I went black anyways.

For me Monstaliner was a waste on money and now has made my truck expensive to get it done right. I was going to go Line-X originally but people on Mud swear by Monstaliner so I gave it a try. Bummer for me it sucks and is chipping badly and easily. At least as easily as my paint chips, maybe easier. Rocks make it blow out and flake off around the rock hit. It is lame.

Cheers
Your guy Sprayed it on? So obviously he had to thing the sh*# out of it because mine was like rolling on cold coagulated latex house paint. I'm going to say that it's the application. I didn't care for monstaliners customer service for sure, but I've beaten my monstaliner vigorously with tree limbs and car doors and gravel and running directly against hill sides going down carved out trails and I don't have a single chip or gouge. Your guy obviously didn't follow the directions to the T since it was sprayed on, and I would venture to say he used standard methods of surface prep for a nice paint job and not for monstaliner specifically. It is very important to thoroughly wash the surface, and use the prescribed cleaner to clean the surface before scuffing. The scuff pad provided is essential to provide a good mechanical bond between the paint and liner, that's why it's relatively coarse. And thorough cleaning after the process as well as removing any loose substrate and proper bare metal prep is also very important. I'm not saying monstaliner is the best thing since sliced bread, but your one unsuccessful case done improperly by someone who does high end paint doesn't invalidate the thousands of successful jobs and reputation for being a tough product. I would probably buy Raptorliner if I did it again, not because there is anything remotely wrong with monstaliners product, raptor liner is nearly identical in composition for their tintable version and it can be sprayed on to a light orange peel nearly smooth finish without heavy thinning resulting in compromising the integrity of the product.

I am almost where you are. My plan was to line my roof of my dark green 80 with a whit or tan or gray. But i also need to paint my hood. So i could line the roof paint the hood. Or pain the roof, paint the hood. Or line the whole thing. My head is spinning a little.

I'm in the middle of doing the sides and deflare areas. I went to the lower edge of the indented horizontal line. I note I'm the only one whose done that. At least if I hate it, it's easy to fix. I sealed in black plastic plugs with black RTV before I painted. It's looks kind of like military rivets. I like that part. One more coat and I'll de-mask it and post. Used duplicolor armor bed liner.

I'd like to see photos after you're finished.

Can the surface prep be accomplished over a series of days or does the whole process from prep to ML have to be accomplished in a short timeframe? I feel like I could devote my time more properly to prep if I wasn't under a crunch.

Prep can be done over months if you want. No rush.

I am in the process of deciding which product to coat the entire exterior of my 80 with. I am leaning toward Monstaliner and I would like to hear from those who have experienced the real world durbility of this product when it comes to banging into large immovable objects along the trail.
