Thanks baldilocks. More than you asked, but here is what I removed vs masked. My LC was lightly wrecked on the front passenger corner when I bought it. Before painting, I replaced the radiator support (and radiator while I was in there) and passenger apron (got the parts a few years back from Jason at Toyota Land Cruiser Used Auto Parts Accessories | CruiserYard | Austin, Texas - excellent vendor). I had already removed the hood, wipers, cowl, bumper, valance, grill, and all lights for that work. I also had the rear window out. So, hood, cowl, and valance were off the vehicle for my first paint session. Also removed the lock from the rear hatch and roof rack. About the only areas I had to mask were the inner frame of the rear window, Toyota Land Cruiser badge, rear wiper nut, front windshield trim, and sunroof trim. I painted the grill, trim around the head/parking lights, and the roof rack black while they were off the vehicle.

For second session, removed door handles, side mirrors, belt line trim (was replacing it all or would have taped it off), parking lights, taillights, and the side markers behind the rear wheels. Taped off both ends of the valance and cowl and around the back windows. Covered the tires/wheels with drop cloths, lowered the windows and tailgate, raised the rear hatch, and taped off the hatch supports. Put some tape on the side window frames and under back windows.

Realize my situation was unique due to the repairs. Other than the hood, cowl, bumper, valance, belt trim (assuming it’s in good shape), and rear window, I would probably remove everything else listed if I was doing another one. My $.02.

The PO of my rig removed the fender flares and had some type of Bondo/Primer applied. Do you all think I can Monstaliner directly over this section after sanding and MEK?

I was trying to get Toyota Cygnus white. Eric did not get a tint special made, so I mixed 3/4 white with 1/4 killer beej.

any more info on this build. I like it

I ended up going with Light Quartz Grey.

Yours is the first I've seen in this color and I like it. Could you post up so more pics of your 80? Thanks

Has anyone done their rig up with the Medium Quartz Grey? If you have, please post some pics .

I asked monstaliner about the Anvil Blue that's on the new wranglers and was told the color was on the works. Do you guys think it would look good on the LC.

I've decided to ML mine as well, but I have one main concern: Will monstalining my 80 decrease or increase it's value? This is my first FJ80, and the first 4x4 I've ever had that I cared about aesthetically screwing up. I don't plan on selling it anytime soon (or ever), but I have been known to switch 4x4s from time to time (previous vehicles - 1st gen 4runner, '77 Scout Traveler, a couple YJs, etc). I thought about having it repainted to stock, but with the cost and durability of a good repaint vs monstaliner the choice is obvious imo. If it had over 200k, I wouldn't care, but It's stock, rust free, and only has 140k. Keep in mind I'm not questioning the quality or value of the product itself, just what affect it might have on the value of my 80.

I'm ordering the color chips, but I was leaning toward midnight special, or the current sans panties. That way I wouldn't feel bad about not painting the door jambs, and I think either one would still match the interior. Might even go with the medium quartz gray, because Texas. Any thoughts?

Btw, I've really been enjoying all the killer rigs, tips and tech. Thanks!

I'm guessing it won't improve resale unless its the right person. I'm keeping mine for life so I didn't care about resale value.

I would agree with @warezdog. To the right person they may find it appealing. I was all set to monstaline my 80 but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I've owned it since new and monstaliner is kinda permanent. Or at least VERY difficult to remove and go back to paint. So I just haven't done it. Not sure that I will.

FWIW, I did rhino line the inside floor of one of my 40s. I hated it. Absolutely hated it.

Thanks for the insight. PO took out the carpet, and I'm putting it back in.

Thank you. It's not too noticable at the door jam. Do you have any regrets or advice?

I should have taped the bottom of the door jamb, it did not end up in a straight line (the rest of the door frame was fine without tape).

The supplied rollers are junk...or maybe I was applying too much pressure. Either way, I ended with several small pieces of roller in my final product. The first roller made it about 80% of the way though the first coat before it started falling apart. The second roller started separating almost immediately.

Wire tape is good for areas where you want new lines. I used it on the back door in line with the handle/body contour.

The monstaliner is pretty easy to work with, but I would recommend starting on the roof until you get used to how it rolls.

Perhaps someone else has found a better roller out there that works better. I have read that one should have several rollers and pans before starting.

My advice, at least with Al's which I used, with the cheap HF texture sprayer was to let it cook a good five minutes before spraying.

My first gallon went well but I rushed mixing the second gallon and didn't wait the five minutes, I thought I had but the first few shots did a bit of running, not bad but still it could have been avoided had I just waited a bit longer.

I contemplated rolling it but spraying it was so much easier and I didn't have to worry about mixing several batches, it took all of 30 minutes to do as well.

I'm being steered away from tinting my upcoming Monstaliner job Toyota 045 white by a friend who says white will become permanent fly dingy looking so I'm considering other colors. There has been some talk about the newer Subaru Desert Khaki H6Q.
Can I get some opinions on these two colors for my now white 80 or factual comments and photos from any one who has use Toyota 464 beige, the Subaru Desert Khaki or Monstaliner color Medium Quartz Grey?

It appears that you 93 is factory 045 white and you have applied Bedliner (brand?) in a brighter white along the bottom of the sides.
My question: What brand liner? Have you had an issue with the white Bedliner becoming grungy looking and not wanting to come completely clean?
