I’ve been back and forth on starting a build thread for this FJ40. My technical skills are basically zero, so any upgrades you see will most likely be the work of others! But against my better judgment, here it is: my 1975 "John Denver" FJ40 with 97k miles. I’d been hunting for a 40 for a while, but everything in my budget was either a rust bucket, a mechanical nightmare, or both. When this one popped up locally, I had to jump on it. Mustard wasn’t my first choice, but I have to say, it really grew on me once I saw it in person—it’s just such an iconic color for these trucks.

There was no rust on the frame and only minimal surface rust on the door bottoms. Heck, even my 1996 Land Cruiser has considerably more rust than this 40. Mechanically, it appeared sound, at least for a fifty-year-old vehicle. The engine ran strong and the transmission worked well enough. The only mechanical issue I noted during the test drive was that it backfired under deceleration. More on that later.

I did some sleuthing and found out that @ColoradoCarlisle bought this rig from the estate of the late great John Denver sometime in 2017. He then worked on bringing it back to life, changing out the fuel tank and rebuilding the carburetor. Sometime in 2019 he sold it to a guy who had the brakes upgraded to discs using a SOR kit, recovered the seats and some other minor fixes. The truck was sold again in 2022. An excerpt of the Craigslist ad from back in 2022 can be seen here . The next owner added absolutely nothing to the truck. He didn’t even change the oil, albeit he drove the truck less than 1,000 miles.

The paint was not original as it was obvious it had been resprayed at some point. It had a few surface rust patches, mismatched paint, a droopy fender and cracked Bondo in several places. The windshield was also broken in two places, making it hard to see out.

As soon as I brought this thing home, I made an appointment with Redline Land Cruisers for them to go over it and set a course of action. They gave me an appointment that was 3 months out, yikes! What was I to do during those 3 months?….. Well, of course, let’s get this thing painted. So off to the painter it went.

Here she is getting the paint and Bondo stripped to bare metal.

That left fender would eventually be replaced with a new one as it required way too much Bondo and never sat quite right.

When putting it back together, I bought all new OEM weatherstripping for the roof, glass and doors. I also replaced the windshield. After 50 years, all the rubber weatherstripping had turned to hard brittle plastic and some had just turned to dust. As much as I like all the OEM stuff, I went with all new stainless steel hardware from Overland Metric, Belmetric and door hinges from @SMG .

Looks great, but Bezel Police gonna git'cha!

Yeah, trust me it did not leave the paint shop with the bezel upside down. Here she is on the trailer. Note the proper bezel orientation...

And here she is at home next to its stablemate. The painters did a good job but the left fender didn't sit right. My bad because I did not notice it until I brought it home. No worries, though as I've sourced a brand new OEM one to replace it. I'm just waiting for the painters to get the new fender painted and then I'll just swap it in.

Side note about the paint color… While I was researching Toyota color codes, I discovered (here on mud of course) that 1975 came with color code 531 whereas all subsequent years used code 532. It seems that when this rig was resprayed back in the day, they used the wrong color code, hence the mismatch between the dash and the windshield frame. Thankfully, the new paint matches the dash perfectly. Here's my VIN tag with the 531 color code.

The PO had installed a gas can carrier on the ambulance door and in the process he'd drilled two large holes into the sheet metal. I had the painters patch those holes and also add this nifty cable cover. Looks so much cleaner this way. Nevermind that the license plate lights have no wiring and the lights themselves are broken. @Coolerman is making me a brand new harness for the combination lights and shiny new lights have been ordered from Toyota. Before and after pictures for your viewing pleasure...

While the JD Cruiser was away getting plastic surgery, I sent the seatbelts to Safety Restore and got all new webbing. Also ordered this awesome tire carrier from @lcwizard . Lordy this thing's hefty!

I was pulled over once, at an inopertuned time, and was told my license plate lights weren't working.

Nice work. Did you get any provenance with the 40? Like a bill of sale from the John Denver estate with the VIN? Curious more than anything.
I didn't buy it from his estate, but I do have the Colorado registration card in the Deutschendorf name.
