I don't want to say anything either and I'll know I'll regret this...
Please start without all the hyperbole, "assault weapon" is a false term created by the Brady bill. You stated this a number of times in your post, following the lead of those in the media who love to use this term. Under my daughter's strict english definition, an "assault weapon" would be anything used to assault another. This could be a firearm, hammer, baseball bat, the spoon used to poison someone, etc. Yet, the term is used for a rifle that "appears" to be what one might use in the military/law enforcement, etc...in other words, "scary". My favorite was the ABC tool who tried to make the rifle sound even scarier when he said, "the assault weapon, known as a Bushmaster", being such a tool he didn't know that it is a manufacturer.
Ask those in our military who have faced armed assaults, let them explain what their experience has been with an "assault weapon". One of my best friends was pinned down in Viequez by protesters using "wrist rocket" style slingshots, shooting anything they could find (he found a 1/2" nut embedded in the wall), they couldn't return fire because they were "protesters" while the projectiles were going through the walls of their building. Not a traditional assault weapon but effective in skilled hands.
I respect the fact that some people wish to allow the local law enforcement to protect themselves and their family. I'd rather take that responsibility on my own accord.
The acts of this severely sick individual will be used, as expressed by the President of the United States last night, by those who want to restrict law abiding citizens rights. Instead of looking at the dynamics of how such a sick individual has been enabled to exist in today's society, without anyone knowing depth of sickness within this individual, that is the problem.
Are serial killers who use rope, knives, poison, strangulation somehow less sick than this phawk who used a firearm?
This sick individual committed the most cowardly act one can commit, dressed in all the regalia, in order to attack an unarmed, unprotected elementary school, going to the youngest, least likely to harm a soul, only to take them from all those who loved them, not because he has access to a firearm, but, because he was a deeply sick person who took his anger out on the most innocent humans he could find.
I'll leave this discussion by saying I've never seen a gun show so busy, absolutely packed...
