1. Guns are a funny market. I've seen over $100 difference on the same pistol from two stores a mile apart. kinda like diamonds, everyone that's serious has "a guy". This is one place it definately pays off to shop around and buy in a small mom and pop shop. The big boxes are often way way overpriced. There are a lot of small ffl dealers that will only charge you a $25 transfer fee above wholesale. You make money in guns when you buy them. If the guy trading you paid too much he will have a warped since of what his gun is actually worth. Msrp on that pistol is $600. I found them on the Internet at buds guns for around $400. Add shipping and $25 transfer fee and you are around $450 on a brand new gun. Then discount it since its used. Rock island is a budget brand 1911 some love them some hate them. I've never had one so can't comment on them.

2. In the great state of nc, citizens are allowed to conduct private party transactions without a ffl. The buyer must have a pistol permit or a concealed weapons permit. if its a pistol permit, then you keep it for your records when you sell it to him along with a copy if his drivers license front and back. If buyer has a ccw permit just get a copy if both. When he trades it to you LEGALLY you will need a pistol permit. The biggest liability as far as chain of custody is on the original buyer that bought it at a store. His name is attached with the serial number. If that pistol ever turns up they are going to knock in his door first.

Forgot about the mags and ammo. Mags are prob $15 a piece and ammo for 45 is $20 per 50 rounds. So 500 is looking better

Long story short, you're supposed to have your pistol permit before purchasing a pistol, makes sense.

Where do you get a pistol permit?

Thanks for all the info Barnes!

You can pick it up at your local sheriff's office for $5 each if I remember correctly. Or take the Concealed carry class and you will not have to have one. CCP is valid for 5 years. Makes buying one so much easier.

I got mine in NC at the local sheriff's office. Takes a few days for background check. The permit allows you to buy up to 5 hand guns.

Thanks for the advice guys :D

I take it that once you have your permit, you don't need to register each gun, do you?

In Durham County (might be statewide), you have to register each handgun at the courthouse. Going today to register my new Ruger.

This is a good resource. Also when you get a purchase permit, it is good for 5 years but only one gun. if you plan on buying more than one in a couple years it's a good idea to get a couple while you are there.

There is no NC state law that requires you to register your firearms, or notify any public official. One county in NC requires its residents to register handguns - Durham County. This power was granted to Durham County by the State Legislature. No other counties or localities are permitted to require registration.

With the sole exception of Durham County, if you are a law-abiding citizen who lives in North Carolina you are entitled to possess the firearms you currently own without any hassle or red tape. Some county sheriffs, inundated with inquiries from people who move to NC from more restrictive areas where registration or ownership permits are required by law, have instituted voluntary notification procedures. In other words, if you have a burning desire to tell a public official about your private possessions, in some counties they will take your information and store it in a computer database. NCRPA recommends that you refrain from doing this - it's none of their business.

My responses in bold.
You prefer a traditional or compound?
Not sure. Just shooting arrows at targets in the woods, but I do like knowing how complex things work.

Hope I explained that well.
Perfect.

I try to buy as much from them as possible within reason. They are an amazing resource and I don't want them to ever leave. lol.
Understood. I agree.

If you want I'll bring them to the ride next week and we can talk more. There is a ton to consider. That would be great. School me. I haven't had much time to look into this possible new hobby yet so some of my questions might be a bit uneducated.

Screw that sh!t. That's against our constitutional rights...I'm not registering crap.

I don't think it's necessarily against our constitutional rights, since they're not preventing us from having handguns. It's a violation of our right to privacy, but I don't really see it as a 2nd Amendment violation. Of course, I'm no expert on the Constitution, so maybe I'm missing something.

It's a misdemeanor if not registered within like 11 days I think. While I disagree with the law, that doesn't change the fact that it is the law, which is all I was pointing out. It's up to each person if you wanna risk the consequences of not following it.

Got my gun safe yesterday. Super happy I spent the extra money and got the bigger safe. After everything was in there it was perfectly organized but full. Now I can justify buying more guns. I have to fill up the safe all the way!! I also looked at the Springfield Armory XD-S. That is one sweet gun for a carry. Definitely on my want to buy list now.

It is amazing what has happened with the prices of safes. I bought my Fort Knox safe in 1993 and got a basic fire rated safe ... when I looked at a shop in Hendersonville over the Thanksgiving weekend, I was amazed that for the same $$, I could now buy a safe that is 50% larger with built in lighting and electrical connections ... granted it was a Liberty and on sale, but that is still a darned good safe.

I picked up a Liberty Franklin which has a 60 minute fire rating at 1200 degrees. I ended up getting the FR50 model which is their big one. It weighs over 1000 lbs so I just have it sitting on the floor in the garage. I don't figure anyone is moving it anytime soon. I just couldn't see buying the smaller one only to still need more storage space in the end. The safe construction is excellent. The fabric on the shelves is pretty thin but the metal and welds etc seem to be top notch. It has the recessed motion sensor lighting and the electrical outlet too. All in all I am very happy with it.

Thanks, Eric. Stacey's is nice. I kind of dig yours, but I'd definitely get something other than pink so we wouldn't get them confused!

I'm surprised nobody mentioned boomsticks for this trip. I might bring something just in case. Oh, now I remember the conversations about it for the summer trip and the whole family-friendly thing.

When we first looked at her Ruckus it was in black. looked nice and super light. She just wasn't digging the whole black bow thing. They said they had a pink one in their other shop and could bring it by. It was a great value. $400 out the door fully equipped and ready to shoot. As she gets into it more I might upgrade her to the Bowtech Heartbreaker. Pretty sweet ride. The Mission bows are pretty nice too. affordable and actually made by Matthews. The diamond line is similar and made by Bowtech. So both brands try to cater to all different price ranges.
