This is kinda away from what John and Mike are talking about...

Please note that I merely stated I was expecting the oncoming debate of well thought out statements, thoughts and opinions. I am happy to see that this is happening. My post made no mention of my personal beliefs, Eric, and should not be taken as either sympathetic to, or in agreement with, anybody else's.

My own thoughts are complicated and not completely fleshed out. I believe that the American society is largely desensitized to the horrors of violence. I believe that the media (music, movies, tv) exacerbates the problem by giving us what we apparently want - songs, movies and shows full of violence without repercussion - based on the fact that we keep buying it. Life moves so fast now that the young don't even have time to think about and process what they see as entertainment, it's just something that happens on a screen or on an ipod, and we're saturated with it - an actor or a "singer" has a beef with somebody so they just blast him and get respect for it (on the show or in the song). The results of that action are rarely shown. Film and song are not blueprints for how to live.

I also think that punishment is lacking and ineffective in this country. Punishment is supposed to be a deterrent to an action or behavior. Now it just seems to be what happens when you get caught. Being a felon should be shameful, not empowering.

The police do not exist to prevent an incident from happening (excepting crowd control); they are there to take charge, restore order, and catch the guilty after the fact. This is why I must defend myself. I will use whatever tool is the fastest to bring into action to do so. That tool might be the shoes on my feet that allow me to run from the threat, a high-powered/high-cap rifle, or the can of soda in my hand. It might have to be all three.

Lastly, I, like some of you, feel that semantics plays a big part in the motives of the antigun crowd. Please educate yourself on the proper terminology in the firearms world or you will be doing a disservice to yourself every time you speak or write.

there is a lot of sound information here.
Did you know that 32,367 people were killed in highway deaths in 2011.
Did you know In 2011, 9,878 people died in drunk driving crashes - one every 53 minutes.
Did you know In 2011, an estimated 2.22 million people were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes

More idiots have access to vehicles then firearms. but, you don't see them trying to ban automobiles or alcohol. knee jerk politics won't solve anything. We as a nation have lost respect for others, and we have let accountability for our actions go unchecked in the name of so called humanity. we need to revamp the judicial system, and hold people accountable for their hanis crimes. even nature will not tolerate an unfit member of a pride, flock, pack, etc...

Well said...

one more thing, the US has 2.3 million prisoners, Our epidemic of incarceration costs us taxpayers ~$72 billion a year. Do we really need to house 2.3 million prisoners?

The ability to defend myself, violently if necessary, from the tyranny of a government is the only reason the democracy in American has lasted as long as it has. Look at the situation in Egypt to glimpse an America without the Second Amendment. The so called "assualt rifles" used the last couple of years by a few individuals are only tools. Without firearms the dedicated individual will only find other means to excercise their will. Look at IEDs and suicide bombers for these other means. As evidenced by the usual outcome of suicide rather then paying for their atrocity it is obvious these individuals do not care for their own life, but only for causing as much pain and suffering as possible and would be willing to strap large explosives to their chest. No gun law will stop violence like what is occuring. It will only alter the method in which it is carried out. Our society has created a generation that has become desensitized to violence and death. From Tupac/Biggie to Black Ops 2 killing is now an everyday occurance for those of us thirty five and under and has been our entire memorable lives.
The real answer, in my opinion, is to empower individuals with the ability to protect themselves (let teachers with a CCP carry in school on their person), enforce strict punishment standards of which mental instability is not an excuse, demand quality parenting and accountability of the individual. Stop making the government responsible and people will be forced to take care of themselves, thereby learning self worth again. I will continue to excercise my rights as a citizen of the greatest nation on Earth by buying guns, ammo, and high capacity magazines as often as I can.

Retail stores....

On my way into to work I heard that Dicks Sporting Goods will longer be selling "assault rifles" and will be returning current inventory back to manufactures. I tried to find it in writing and found this about Wal Mart. :hhmm:

http://blogs.wsj.com/corporate-inte...kes-an-assault-rifle-off-its-virtual-shelves/

I think this is a knee jerk reaction and over reaction and just plain stupid. Im sure Wal Mart will do the PC thing and slowly remove it's self from all "assault weapon" sales. But for Wal Mart loosing a few gun customers probally wont hurt their bottom line. For Dicks they dont have much else that interest me besides their guns and hunting gear.
Part of me says wow! If two main stream box stores are going to stop selling "assault weapons" maybe I should go out and buy a few more. To me this is a sign that more companies will be jumping on the anti "assault weapon" ban.

Thanks for listening to the rambalings of a Meatball. Just some thoughts at 645 this mornings. I know most of you are still asleep except for our crazy bearded friend.:grinpimp:

John I didn't mean to imply anything regarding anyone's personal beliefs. I just re-read my initial post and it may not have been worded exactly as I had meant it. So please accept my apologies if it did indeed come out wrong. It was more of a disclaimer for my views as opposed to anyone else's.

This is a great post and you bring up another excellent point regarding punishment of crimes. Severely lacking IMO. Prison should indeed be punishment and not a feeling of empowerment. Getting a law degree in prison and a book deal hardly seems fit punishment for the crimes some people are in prison for.

I would like to add that as always, I am ever impressed with this group. This is such a hot button and sensitive subject and it's great that we can all discuss this like gentlemen so that we can see different perspectives. Kudos boys....Kudos.

Darin we know you wake up at 4am every morning and eat your wheeties and 30 cups of coffee. :)

What are you looking at buying or is that a secret?

another major retailer.....

"Cheaper Than Dirt! is suspending online sales of firearms effective immediately. We are reviewing our policy internally, and will continue to be the leader in the outdoor industry with our full line of gear and accessories."

From their Facebook page. Whose next?

Has anyone bought a firearm off the net? Whats the procedure?

Yes ..

1) Purchase firearm.
2) Get local FFL to send FFL to seller.
3) Seller ships to your local FFL
4) You go to local FFL, pay transfer fee, and fill out federal paperwork.
5) Walk out with your new to you firearm ...

Gunbroker and Buds Gun Shop have pretty good overviews.

I've shot an ar15, suppressed ar15-22, ar10 and a suppressed ar10. Owned a Barnes ar15 for about a year but didn't have a place to shoot it...so it was sold to fund other hobbies.

By far the suppressed ar10 was my favorite...big money and a class 3 license required. The suppressed ar15-22 was nice too. Sounded like a pellet gun.

Never had a chance to shoot a sbr but always wanted to...another class 3 item. One day I might set up a trust when I have the $$$ to afford class 3 items and have a place to shoot them.
