The FJ55 Weatherstrip Guide

I've been compiling this list for awhile as I have been "refurbishing" my 55. Following are part numbers, prices, sources, and pics for most of the rubber parts on the Pig. Most parts are identical or very close to factory - while a few were chosen for economics. If I left out anything, please add.....

Please chime in and correct me if I am wrong or there is additional insight.
In the course of reading all of this I see only a couple of changes and there are many investigative digressions that never really get answered, were dropped or PM'd but are not here. This is only ment as a summary for the aid of lazy confused guys like me.

For the Window Channel: The material numbers remain constant as above and the consensus is that it seems to work fairly well. Prices change and have probably changed again. The main change here is in the TAILGATE CHANNEL: PVcruisers is no longer in business. However, Slocruisers makes this piece but is out of stock currently ~$249.00 at last production. And Cabe Toyota in CA had some of the remaining stock from PVcruisers.

Good oversight and installation information on this thread are posts #42 and #198-199.

For the Window Felts: Again these are said to remain the same with one exception /one option; and they are said to work well. Costs as with all of them change with time.
It has been suggested (post #34) that tailgate piece zx819752R is a better fit for the outer door felts because of its wiper form and making a better seal.
Some installation instructions are at post #186.

For the Door Weatherstrip (on the door itself): These are again said to work well but are somewhat fatter than stock. Here according to one post there has been a part number change for the passenger side and tailgate side strips.
Passenger side changed from ZX813689B to ZX813689r Tailgate sides went from ZX133178W to ZX813120n

Really the more elegant/better solution for the Tailgate sides and outer "felt" is the factory remake from Slowcrusiers--a one pc part dead on with the OEM

Good oversight and instruction on the Door weatherstrip is at Post # 187 and #190-192.

For the Body Molding: Again the material numbers (JCW) remain the same. :whoops:This seems to be the largest problem area with no absolute best fit. Many posts work at a thickness problem and door closure and seal. There are a couple of recommendations for just using the door molding from SOR that, while more expensive and not perfect, are a better fit with less hassle in installation.

The primary change is that thanks to N2666s SloCruisers is currently working on a remake of the OEM molding that runs the edge laps that catch the tailgate and down horizontialy at the base of the TG aperature.

For the Glass Weatherstrip: Good and Bad here.

Windshield: Available at SOR (120-036-A) or Slocruisers.

Cargo Windows: PVcruisers out of Business. Cabe Toyota of Ca may still have some of his stock. Soon otherwise to be UNOBTAINIUM. However, Some have spliced the windshield W/S to work on Cargo areas (another thread).

1/4 Rear Door windows: Slocruisers is working on the production of these so, they may be revised from unobtainium to :bounce: Wahoo.

Older model wing window: Has been produced by Slocruisers and may continue to be?

Other items:These, as far as it is known are said to be available and with the same part numbers.
Edit: post 104 states in the 2007 restoration specialties cat. pg 163 part #9416 is the headliner clip. I have not found these in the 2008 catologue.

NEW OTHER ITEMS:

Door handle seals: Available at Slocruisers. They have been available through Arthog here on MUD as well.
Door lock Button grommets: Available at SOR or Toyota part #90480-10102-01.
Door Lock buttons Most any old truck or Sedan of 70's era or Toyota part # 69747-20020-co

Well that is it for the moment or until someone corrects or adds. (or I review)

Looking great Eric, this will be a great help especially if others chime in and give affirmation on these. I'm sure many will appreciate your efforts!

I do have a question for anyone: When I pulled the body side door weather stripping off of my 7/70 the rubber and the welting were seperated pieces. That is the rubber is easily removed from the outer welting material. Is that usual or is that a product of the desert heat?

.

on two pigs, i've noticed that the rubber is seperate.

I am wondering this because if it is typical then why not have it reproduced and reuse the welting? Probably good reasons but I am not thinking of them right now.
QUOTE]

the welting shrinks, so i'd rather not reuse. i've gone to the newer rubber/welting togther setup on one pig. don't have the money to do the other pig yet.

options for tailgate window holding channel rubber

working on the tailgate this evening found the channel rubber holding the tailgate window on the transplant pig is about 70% gone.......the glass was rattling and it just came all the way out with a very light pull:whoops:there in no mention of a replacement on this thread or others that I can see; any ideas for a replacement?.......we will all need this rubber sooner or later....part # 26 off SORs website but also listed as no longer available:frown: TIA

I've got to think that's fairly simple. I would just use a peice of rubber slipped in the channel on top of glass adhesive and then glass adhesive on the rubber as well. It doesn't need to be beautiful, just functional as it is not visible anyways.

I think I have that piece new in a bag. Let me go check and take a profile.

3/16 inner channel width (glass)
5/8 inner channel height

3/8 total width
3/4 total height

lip starts
5/8 from bottom
is 3/16 wide.

total lenght is 2ft 10 inches.

This one has a Spector part number on it. So I cannot confirm if it's OEM.

yep, Inge,Charles, and Marshal.........those darn insignificant little lips make a big difference when you are trying to stuff the glass back into the channel, I tried cutting an old inner tube but the lack of lips whupped me:mad: after about 2 hours of trying to get the glass in place:frown:the inner tube rubber just kept inverting on me........over and over:crybaby:..........soo I just ended up cutting 4 small sections from the less deteriorated part about 3 inches long and spaced them out enough to cradle the glass and keep it from rattling but knowing quite well that a small tug will pull the whole thing apart:eek:
Inge.........PM sent :)............this PM off to the wreckers to look at mini truck boosters to see if I can get brakes working..........with clutch and brakes:bounce:it might be drivable......... the 69 after 12 years sitting.......the 79 after only one year :D

I do declare...that's purrty...Marshall do you have everything? :)
Too bad they don't have that anymore...I am getting to like the looks of new rubber and metal. I am patently late on all that stuff.

Car Collector show

This weekend in Carlisle Pa is a huge car collector and swap meet. My neighbor's headed up for the weekend with a bag of weather strips I'm taking off my truck. The weather strip vendors will be there. Looking to score some samples that will work on the 55. Check out the vendor list, under Event Related Information (middle of page) its a huge event www.carsatcarlisle.com

wow, it would be great if you could find a manufacturer to fab this last item "channel rubber holding the tailgate window"..........100% agree with cruiser guy, it does not have to be purty, just keep the blasted window from rattling and coming out of the groove when you raise or lower it causing it to stick half open/shut TIA

It looks simple enough that there ought to be something out there with close enough measures. Is it about the same height and thickness as the window channel pcs.?

Rats...now you got me started fixating again. Where did I put that TG window glass runl...late night looking in Garage..can't find it. Did look at a 70 window glass run rubber which looks similar to Marshall's except the outside lip has an extra bent length kinda like some of the W/S he had in profile. Wondered about it until I realized that when the window is up it would provide extra moisture/rain barrier in conjunction with the window.

Eric, I fought:mad: with what I thought would be very simple solution with a strip of old inner tube rubber; hey, just cut a strip and jam it in?!.......wrong:bang:the blasted inner tube rubber wanted to invert and go into the groove beneath the glass instead of beside it:mad:...........in retrospect :hhmm: probably should have taken out the glass and regulator mechanism completely and cut a strip about one inch wider on each side than I needed and after everything was glued in place cut off the excess with an exacto knife...much prefer the original seals as they will keep water out of the holding channel and the lip would have made it so much easier to install....my 0.02;

I've search just a few places I know of. Nothing so far. But I'm sure someone out there has a profile that will work.

Don't know about the auto world, but the big trucks use something like a thick flat rubbery/tarish tape to hold the windows. it's just sticky enough to stick to both the window and the rail.
